Laptop battery life...?

I was just wondering about laptop battery life.

I got a brand new Dell 1500 and the battery life is only 1h 30m but a friend of mine has a HP (not sure of the type) and it lasts almsot 4h...

His is more basic in the way that mine has a 1gb ram, 512 video card, 80gb hd, and alot more performance parts, but they both have the 6-cell batteries.... Is it the computer maker or the performance upgrades mine has?

Update:

The laptop does have power modes, and even when I place it on Max Batt. instead of Max. Performance, it only increases it by 10-20 minutes...

The battery shouldn't be bad, but I will contact Dell to see what I can do.

Update 2:

I bought my own laptop, im 17...

If your battery is fully charged and it only has an hour and a half, then there's something wrong with the battery. Most batteries for all laptops should run for at least 3hours or more. If you just got that new laptop then you should still have warrenty for the battery. Goto www.support.dell.com and click on the chat online, located near the top right of the website. They'll ask you for the service tag of the laptop. I've done this so many times. Hope this helps.

    Consider this:

You mentioned that your laptop consists of higher performance parts, isn't it? Now those components are really eating away your battery life, or the period.

I think, the video card is consuming most of the power. Try changing the laptop power configuration to use power minimum (usually laptops are equipped with power modes). You can select one of those modes to balance with performance and battery life.

1: Different computer companies have different battery lengths.

2: The more basic, the less power use

3: Bad Batteries wouldn't work for long...

Well, battery life depends on how you are using the your laptop, if you are playing some music videos then it will obviously shorthend your battery life. Yes, sometime it depends on the battery you are installed on your laptop. Normally laptop battery has such life i.e. 1:30 hr..
