    Who knows?

How would be able to protect ourselves against alien technology? What technology might they have? If they can come here faster than light, couldn't their engines destroy our whole planet?

I think it's kind of a waste of money at this point. Our nuclear missles could be used against space-based targets in a pinch.

I think asteroids and comets are a more dangerous short-term threat.

    Good luck,

I don't think it would help. Any civilization advanced enough to travel the distance through space to reach us would be advanced enough to take over the planet without ever showing themselves.

They could use a biological weapon to dispose of us, some massive change to the atmosphere, radiation poisoning on a global level. All of this could be done without our even knowing we were being attacked, we would just think that we did it to ourselves.

The only case for have some kind of defense would be if the alien's were planning on enslaving the population and needed to use some sort of ground force to do that. In that case, arming the population would have the most success. Much more difficult to find a gun in every house than to destroy several large military type installations.

I think we have far more important real problems to solve here on earth before we start to worry about alien invasions. Even if we DID spend billions on a defence against invasion from space, what confidence could we have that it would be any good? Aliens who have the technology to traverse the space between stars and galaxies are unlikely to be bothered by any weapons that we might deploy against them.

Uh...no. The nearest planet that could maybe have life on it is 200 million light years away. Very unlikely we will be "visited" by alien life.

Besides, humans will probably make themselves extinct long before something like that happens.

    ***UPDATE***

Dude, I just picked up my Scientific American magazine, and this is from the cover:

"Are We Living With Alien Cells? Did life on Earth arise more than once? Strange forms may still survive."

    Maybe I was wrong...

If we ever would be able to work together as a world unit, there would be no problems. Since most of the west does not see eye to eye on some very hot topics from the east, this will never take place.

We do not have anything that could defend us against space aliens. If they have the technology to get here from wherever it is they come from they can blow us out of the universe without blinking an eye. Look at sci-fi movies. We are defenseless.

Supposedly there is something like a beam that shoots at whatever comes close to the earth atmosphere. But of course they try to say its for craters that enter the earth to break them up a little better (yea right)

Only from the illegal aliens. If they follow proper immigration procedures I don't care where they come from as long as they obey the laws.

We are MORE likely to be hit by an asteroid, solar storm or ice age......we should prepare for things we KNOW can happen rather than those we "think" might happen.
