Where did the saying "NO way" come from?

Did it evolve from a logical line of response that got socially shortened to its current forM?

Very interested!

"There is no way that could happen."

It is simply a shortened version of that and similar sentences.

I'm not really positive about this, but since I want to make a guess I will say it must have come about from the question "Is there any way..." whenever the situation seemed impossible and someone was looking for an outlook with more positivity to be the outcome. It could have be the immediate response that was given to the eternal optimist. I'm only guessing, but it sort of makes sense to me.
