I would not suggest a truck for your 1st car, simly becuase of gas prices and roll over safety. But if you do get a truck here are a few suggestions.
1st if you live somewhere where you would be driving this truck in the snow more than once or twice a year, I would highly suggest a 4 wheel drive model, even though they get worse gas mileage. I live in Maine where it snows all winter long. I know people who have RWD pickup trucks and even with bags of sand in the back as weight, they still get stuck at home every storm we get.
So, for 4 wheel drive trucks, the ultimate choice is the Toyota Tacoma. No matter what year you get it was made with high quality. These trucks are extremely reliable and can take some brutal punishment. My father owns a 2000 Toyota 4Runner which is just like a Tacoma only theSUV version, his has just over 200K miles on it and it still runs great, not to mention the 4 wheel drive system is the bes Ive ever seen!!!
In 2007 the 2WD Ford Ranger with the 4 cylinder engine was rated as the truck with best gas mileage. But the Toyota Tacoma with 4 wheel drive was only 2 miles per gallon different!! The Ford Ranger is a decent truck, but is just not of the same quality as the Toyota.
If you decide to go fullsize, Toyota Tunda has been the best rated truck for the last few years. In my opinion it is still the best, but the most recent report from Consumer's Reports rated the Silverado above the Tundra. So for a fullsize truck I would recommend the Tundra, followed by Silverado and then it would be either the Nissan Titan or Ford F150.
If you are considering a truck becuase of the 4 wheel drive, then Subaru would be a great alternative. It offers a top of the line AWD system, usually gets better gas mileage than big trucks or SUV's, offers a 5 star safety rating in every category for every model, is extremely reliable and has many options. Whether you want the Impreza sedan, or wagon, or the speedy WRX or insanely fast WRX STi! The Legacy is a great fullsize sedan, and also comes in a wagon form. Both the Impreza and Legacy come in an Outback edition which offers more ground clearance. The 05 and newer Legacy 2.5GT's offer the same engine found in the STi, but it is tuned down a little, but still offers a whopping 250HP!!
If you dont need an AWD car, a FWD or RWD would get better gas mileage. Depending on what your price range and style and main concerns are, here are a few that I like.
Honda Accord EX V6 coupe (03-07, or all new 08)
Acura TL type S (one of fastest FWD cars, very luxurious)
Honda Prelude (sporty, gas friendly, looks great handles awesome, easy to modify)
Honda CRX (almost best ever on gas, so small it handles like a go kart! Can easily be modified, or turbo'd, or engine swap)
Mazda Speed3 (I believe its currently the fastest FWD car)
Acura Integra GSR (sporty, fast, good on gas, aftermarket parts are everywhere, not so good on insurance, high theft rate if you live in the city)
Acura RSX type S (insanely fast for FWD, great mix or luxury, sportiness and convienence, costs alot to insure though)
Toyota Camry (very reliable, very practical, newer V6 models have well over 250HP!!! not the same boring familymobile it used to be, niether is the Accord)
Toyota MR2 turbo (very cheap for the amount of power)
VW R32 (basically an AWD 6 cylinder GTi, very rare only 5,000 in 2004 and another 5,000 in 2008)
Subaru WRX STi, Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution, Nissan 350Z, INfiniti G35, Mazda RX8, Honda S2000 CR
GOod Luck

A 2007 for a first car, no way!!!! You can expect to get into an accident within the first 5yrs of driving, and wouldn't it be better to be driving something you didn't need over $20,000 to replace?? Not to mention insurance would be sky high for you on a brand new truck esp if you get it financed and are required to carry full coverage. Get a truck but make it an older model so when you dent it, scratch it, run over the parking cement block with it, or any other thing that is bound to happen to a first time driver, #1 you will be protected in a big older sturdy truck #2 it won't be a big loss of money if you do wreak it. And, an older truck you can pay for all at once, no car payments

buy the closest thing you can afford to your dream car because later in life you may not be able to with other responsibilities.
