What sort of questions can I ask my 11-year-old boy cousin to learn more about him?

My uncle died recently, and I want to reach out to my little boy cousin and reconnect. However, (1) I'm a teenage girl, (2) I have no idea what to ask 11-year-olds these days and (3) I live halfway across the country from him. I want to learn more about him and make sure that emotionally he's ok (I'm not sure if his mother does this for him...but I have my doubts about her), but I'm having problems coming up with conversation topics. I usually "talk" to him on AIM or through email, although I could start talking to him on the phone. Does anyone have any suggestions? Also, my mom and I want to give him (and his 9 year old brother) something (maybe a magazine subscription?) for christmas...but we're not really sure what they'd like. Any suggestions?

If your talking and he ever mentions his Dad? You might want to bring up to him the good things his Dad did for you all, the good memories, make him smile and remember all the good he did when he was here.

An 11 year old is usually interested in a specific sport they are playing or a TV show they watch and their friends, I have a 12 yr old a 10 yr old and an 8 yr old. My 12 yr old was mostly into classes, friends, and a sport she liked, she liked photos, reading, journal writing, and girly magazines BIG TIME!

My boys don't really like magazines, they are more into, PS2 games or Nintendo DS games, playing on the trampoline, hanging out with boys thier age, having sleepover, roasting marshmallows and having camp outs. Ask him what his favorite sport is or if there is a sport he would like to try. This is a time in middle school, where they learn a sport, in school. See what his favorite subject is in school, does he like school, does he ride the bus, whats his favorite music? What does he want for Christmas, does he like to read? if so what kind of books, kids his age are more into a book series, like Goosebumps, Twitches, Hardy Boys, series books. Does he like to draw, or write. The subjects are endless. Does he like anyone in school? What do him and his friends do for fun.

A gift card is a wonderful gift if your not sure what to get someone, that way they get pick it out, and cash is even better!!!! Kids that age love having money. and as for the card..... Make it! Go to hobby lobby, get some scrapbook paper, and some stickers that relate to him, or the holiday, fold it and cut it in a unique way, use glitter on it maybe or whatever you have around the house, they have more memories when they are made.

I am sure this is a difficult time for them all, maybe try getting him a funny movie, like "The Elf" it is so DANG FUNNY! They will watch it over and over. Good Luck and it's really cool you want to do something for them.

He can learn about everything, especially math, english, history, science, art, music, and life principles.
