Why do people believe that the story they tell themselves is truth?
No I am NOT saying with 'story' that it is a concept, belief, image, picture, dream, fantasy, opinion, worldview, etc., and that then people are trying to live these xxxxx.
By story I mean the words one strings together in one's head forming a 'creative story' about what has happened around them and to them. The nature of 'story' is that it's totally fictional, it's made up and comes from the individual mind. It's like if there is an accident and many witnesses and the police query each person. Every witness will have a totally different account of the happening, police know this. Often nobody will have an accurate decription of what happened.
I'm not talking about someone trying to live a concept, rather 'the story phenomena' is the way that consciousness becomes manifest and is observable because of our ability to think.

Because they don't know what is the truth.

1. THE RULES DON'T APPLY TO ME. I see this one quite a bit. I think that there are some rules that are okay to break some of the time, but that doesn't mean every rule should be thrown out the door. 2. AGENTS AND EDITORS HAVE IT IN FOR ME. I haven't seen this one a lot, but I have seen it, and it's sad. If you want to be a writer you need to accept that maybe you aren't good enough, and that if you aren't good enough you won't stop trying until you are. 3. I'M NOT A MARKETER, I'M A WRITER! This one I haven't seen, but that's probably because almost everyone I know or have talked to is either published or currently writing. If I knew more people trying to get published, maybe I would see this more. 4. I SHOULD SPEND A LOT OF TIME FANTASIZING OVER WHERE I WILL BE PUBLISHED NOW THAT I'VE WRITTEN TWO CHAPTERS OF MY NOVEL. This is the biggest problem I see in new writers. They are writing to be published. You may be asking, "Wait, isn't every author writing to be published?" The difference is that for authors that will be published, getting published isn't their goal - writing is. Getting published is merely the result of a goal to write. For writers who may not be published (at least until they change how they look at things), getting published is their one and only goal, and because of that they may not even get there. 5. I'M A BETTER WRITER THAN MOST PUBLISHED AUTHORS. I've seen this one quite a bit. Books that are published are typically published for a reason. Thinking you're better than published authors is the first step to becoming unwilling to change and improve, and being unwilling to change and improve is the first step to failing as an author. If there's one I was definitely guilty of is was #4. I focused so much on getting published that if I didn't think my book was publishing material I tossed it out. I didn't even want to write unless I was sure it would be published. I have finally gotten over this delusion, and getting published really isn't my goal anymore. I'm not saying I don't want to be published (I do with all my heart), but if my first completed book isn't good enough, then oh well. At least I gained all that experience, and on to the next project I go. Another I was (and sort of still am) guilty of, at least to a certain degree, is #5. For a long time I wanted my writing to be perfect, and it hurt me so much to think that it wasn't that I denied any faults. I'm still working on overcoming this mindset, and I've come a long way. I'm getting better and better at excepting that my writing needs work, and now I'm finally starting to feel that I have what it takes to never give up. If I'm not good enough, and I'm probably not, then I won't stop until I am. I am going to be an author no matter what it takes, and I'm ready to give it my all :)

Each individual perception is filtered thru their ego, which will alter or change what they perceive to fit their existing concepts, beliefs, & understanding. But this is only part of the picture, degree of wakefulness comes into play also. The human mind will "fill in the blanks" of what was not seen, & this can be an unconscious act. This is one of the reasons you can have 4 witnesses to an event, & all 4 honestly preceived some different course of events. Unfortunately, most are sleepwalking thru life, all in different degrees. True perception without subjective impressions & "filling in the blanks" events does not occur till we wake up. Blessings.

With 'story' you are saying: Concept, belief, image, picture, dream, fantasy, opinion, worldview, etc. and that people are trying to live these.
People believe their 'story' because they are identified with it, - it is their property, this gives sense to their life, this keeps them busy. This makes good part of people's personality; out of this they get their feeling of existence. Because of this they are seeking constantly confirmation, out of this they are expressing themselves, if necessary provoking others if confirmation is not given freely.
What people own this way must be their 'truth' and they will defend it with all means, there is no openness for a 'truth' that is different from their own.

One can answer this question just by observing ones surrounding.
There is this dog, owning a bone. It is an old bone, it has nothing that could be worth defending it, but the dog will use all his strength against any one who only comes near to his bone. Indeed the dog not only owns this rotten old bone, the bone is part of the dog, it is part of his life story and so his truth. Who wants to doubt this, can try to come near to the bone and will see...
Humans are not different, try to tell them that their bone is rotten, worn out and nothing worth, they will react in the same way as the dog... Truth is what we own, truth is what we are. Nobody is allowed to touch this, wanting to reduce it.
So when observing nature, we might find out, that the same nature forces work in all beings and out of this we might be able to do a step going beyond our well kept truth and maybe stepping out of our story...
Yes, it will be difficult that the dog will let go of his old bone, but who knows...Quantum jumps can happen!?

The MIND operates behind the scenes, so to speak, as it operates the brain. The MIND feeds thoughts to the Left-Hemisphere of the brain to guide ones thoughts and actions.
What the MIND uses as a guide in determining what thought to feed the L-H is ones Fate Karma relative to what is happening in ones environment.
Ones beliefs are consistent with what one has been told, what one has read, and what ones MIND sees fit for one to believe. If any part of this base becomes unworkable with the focus ones MIND wants one to maintain, ones MIND simply feeds "Delusional Thoughts" to ones L-H to nudge one back into what ones MIND wants one to believe.
The difficult task is two-fold. One, it is hard for most people observing someone to differentiate the person from what the person believes, and two, it is difficult to realize that what one believes is the result of ones MIND, and not the person's Soul. We blame the person as a whole... forgetting entirely [if we even knew that the person is in Reality a Soul quite separate from the part he/she is playing] at any given point in time.
People "think" the truth is what their MINDs tell them is true. And, normally it is not possible to dissuade them with discussion.

Because the human ego identified mind wants something to hold onto. The mind can't stand to not know something that has caught it's attention. By knowing the mind means to categorize, conceptualize and hold static which is not the knowing of pure awareness which is open, alive and flowing. It is quite a joke when one knows that truth is always flowing and alive so anything the mind succeeds in capturing cannot be truth.

Perhaps that is a reason that Christ gave us the '2 or more witnesses' principle; Matt 18:16, 2 Cor. 13:1.

TRUTH is how it HITS us, and how we percept TRUTH!
How were YOU raised to believe?
For example, if you were RAISED to believe a certain way, and yet SHOWN a whole different "story, or example" then....thats why some people dont BELIEVE!! its called simple FAITH!!
Others , like me , have NO trouble at all in FAITH, because it jumped up and hit me every morning with a hug and prayer and love!! and kisses every nite before i went to bed
i was never yelled at , nor do i EVER EVER remember my parents either one of them EVER so much as raising their voices at me!!
in other words...they PRACTICED what they preached!! and therefore, you have no problem with the TRUTH!!!!!
Hugz and merry CHRISTmas!!!!

I think when we are in a painful situation we tend to tell ourselves a story that provides us comfort and until we
are ready to face the truer facts we won't let go of that
story.
