    The quadratic formula works like this:

    ax^2 + bx + c = 0

    x = ( -b +/- sqrt(b^2 - 4ac) ) / 2a

    As far as real life examples, here is a page that talks about using the quadratic to solve a number of simplistic problems.

    Also -- there are many uses for the quadratic equation in upper level math (Calculus, Differential Equations, Linear Algebra, etc.) These upper division maths are used frequently to model complex problems in economics, physics and other areas.

    Maths is used in about just about every type of engineering or physics. The quadratic equation is used in engineering to calculate the time of flight for a projectile. Another maths area frequently used maths topic used in engineering is trigonometry which is used to calculate dimensions when maching an object

    The firing of a cannon forms a parabola of some sort.

    Where is it going to hit if you assume that the ground in front of you is flat? What if you were on a hill? How far does the shot go?
