Savory "Cookie" Appetizer?
Not to be sacreligious or anything, but I am not a huge fan of all sweets on the holidays, not even chocolate. I prefer salt and fat - lol.
For a Christmas party I'm going to, I want to create some sort of pastry, cut it out with cookie cutters like sugar cookies, and decorate it with, say, cream cheese colored with paprika or turmeric or avocado paste or whatever, flavored with different things, piped on just like you would on a gingerbread man or something...using bits of olive for eyes, etc.
Any suggestions for the "frosting" so far as colors and flavors and ingredients go? Any other suggestion of things to decorate them with? Any pastry suggestions? I want these to look a lot like real sugar cookies. Thanks.

I think this is a great idea and also good for tea parties, bridal showers, etc.
Pastry ideas: phyllo/puff pastry, frozen pizza dough, frozen biscuits that you can peel apart the layers. Also white sandwich bread with the crusts cut off. Roll the bread to flatten it, cut the shapes out, then toast in the oven.
You have plenty of ideas already going. Have fun!

I wouldnt try to hard with this one to make them "cutsy" - without care it could look like the abominable snowman from hell or something LOL Here's a pretty failsafe idea for you anyway!
Parmesan Snowmen Baskets
Shred parmesan cheese, and arrange shreds in cookie cutters on a baking sheet. remove cutters and bake until just melted and browning around the outside lightly. This will be the snowmans Parka (lol). Take out of oven immediately and press down over inverted round teacup (to make a "basket") and let this cool. Fill bottom with finely chopped tomato and basil, then cover this with whipped cream cheese. That's the face for your snowman- add two sliced black olives for eyes, a baby carrot sticking out of the center for a nose, and half a black olive or baby capers to make a smile. Its classy, yummy and it is a christmas character! : )
Here's a photo of the parmesan "baskets" but with other filling- i couldn't find any snowmen.

Just so u know what i'm talking about... I'm sure you can invent other character faces as well. All the best and merry xmas!
