sounds like your inlet valve. it has a solenoid on it that opens the valve when it gets voltage from timer. id check there first by turning off the breaker, removing the access panel at bottom. they are usually right up front at the bottom left side of the unit. it will either have copper tubing or possible a braided stanless steel hose connected to it from the hot water valve under your sink. disconnect the plug on it. it should have 2 wire in it. if you have a multi meter, check across the contacts on the valve to see if you have continuity. you should get a reading across it. if you dont then the coil is open and you need a new valve.

Have read all your answers but I do not agree with them. With the water under pressure, the valve in either dishwasher or washing machine could become faulty and the water would continue to flow. Just a little water could cause a lot of mess and disruption. My husband has been called to sort out problems people have had with flooding. Another side to this is if appliances are set on timed for overnight use. It is very easy for the machine to continue filling if one component goes wrong. He has witnessed the devastation caused. I never leave the water on, on either my dishwasher or washing machine. It has only to go wrong once. Better for you to have the valve where you can reach it. Better safe than sorry.

It's probably a problem with the timer or the electric valve that lets the water in.

A person who's kind of handy could test to see if the fill valve is getting voltage when the machine should be filling. If not... timer... If so... bad fill valve...

Testing the fill valve for continuity would not tell you if it's getting power when it's supposed to, or if it's electrically fine but physically stuck.... Almost useless...

The float that senses when the machine's full could be stuck / bad... I'd imagine the pump would run in that case and make some noise...

As water is filling your dishwasher, a float rises along with it. When the float reaches a predetermined level, it shuts off the flow of water, thereby preventing a leak. Sometimes the float can get stuck in the wrong position in a dishwasher, and it can prevent your dishwasher from filling. Check your float assembly. Replace it if you need to.

That happened to me. The pump had lost its prime. All I had to do was dump a gallon of water in.
