Years ago I ate vegetarian because my roommates were vegetarian and it was easier and cheaper. I got a raise at work and decided to buy my BF a steak dinner.

The steak looked, smelled and tasted good to me but I could only eat a few bites, and kinda had some cramping the next day.

I think your system gets used to certain food and then has trouble dealing with new things.

At that time I kept incorporating small amounts of meat into my diet and was eventually back to a full fledged omnivore.

    Sort of.

I have been vegetarian since 1984. Once in while I have accidently tasted meat, I got a little nauseous when that happened, but nothing serious.

I think it's mostly psychological, but you get used to certain tastes. When something tastes "wrong" to you it can trigger physical reaction--but I think it's a reaction to what you taste. Not some kind of magical chemical reaction or whatever.

Some people get sick eating something one time, and then they can't stand to eat it again. Sometimes the reaction stays with people so strongly that they start to throw up if they see the food that bothered them. My Dad is like that with watermelon. My brother is like that with any kind of squash. My aunt gave me some nasty cookes that made me sick once. I kept the container, and everytime I looked at the container I felt a little sick. Those cookies must have been pretty bad.

I think when I started to become vegetarians, I feel cleaner and healthier ... and once in a while, I need to eat meat because when I go party or invited dinners, sometime I can't avoid it coz I don't want to be complicated. But I could feel that my taste for meats are changed, I felt like it wasn't tasted good anymore and the smells were making me sick .... so I couldn't eat that much :(

But that was just me so I don't know about others :)

I once took a bite of an egg roll not knowing it had white meat chicken in it until I checked the ingredients. I didn't make it for dinner, but yeah. I flipped out and gargled with water and brushed my teeth, but I didn't become ill. Just a little freaked out.

Yeah, it can happen. I've either been shockingly lucky never to unknowlingly eat animal foods or it hasn't bothered me, but I have a cast-iron digestive system. I've known people who've had some pretty unpleasant gastric symptoms when they've ingested something unexpectedly.

Only if your mind develops enough revulsion to make you psychosomatic ally ill. That's when the mind overrules reality. The only way that you would 'really' be ill is if the meat were tainted.

Once a former friend tricked me! Gave me a meal said it was fake meat.. stupid me I believed him. After I finished eating.. he laughed and said ha ha you ate meat.. and admitted that he lied! I got a little sick in my stomache but nothing serious! Needless to say that former friend is no longer a friend!

    Be careful who you trust!

    It's possible, but not common.
