Do you dislike receiving gift cards instead of "real" presents?

Lately, I've seen a lot of columnists and bloggers writing about how gift cards are lame, but I actually like receiving them. What do think, Answers community? Good gift? Cop out? Or does it depend on the giver/recipient/store?

Beats the heck out of returns after Christmas. That line of people. The time.

I'd rather get a gift card, than a gift I didn't care for or have any use for. If someone has NO idea what to get me, a gift card would be appreciated...that they feel the desire to give me anything at all is a kewl thing so even a gift I'm not excited about isn't really unwelcome...but it may end up being re-gifted or in a yard sale down the road.

i dont mind receiving them. but i dont like giving them. i have a family that is big cause of divorce. 6 brothers and sisters. two of them are married. i have 2 nephews and a neice. then my moms ex husband. my boyfriends family. grr lots of people to shop for. its hard to decide an amount to give someone. i actually had my 15 year old sister say "what am i going to do with that?" when i gave all my siblings and there spouses 25 dollar gift cards for walmart. i thought it was nice enough that i gave them anything at all!! no one knows exactly what you spend on an individual item so its better to give gifts. i try to go for things you wont return. cloths and such you can buy the wrong styles or sizes. this year it was alot of gift sets and dvds. you cant go wrong there. i spend more on my parents and put more thought into there gifts. i know every year there going to out do me and there the ones making dinner and getting the family together. so they deserve the most attention.

i like getting gift cards. i wouldnt even mind gas cards or grocery store cards. im 23 and growing up and now realise what the cost of living is. any little bit counts.

I guess it would be the particular store, and of course how much money it's worth, but I love getting gift cards as a small Christmas/Birthday present from a friend. It's like instead of getting personal and spending 10-15 minutes explaining what you want you can just tell "Oh just get me a gift card, you know my favorite stores" and you get to pick out your own gift.

I'm not crazy on the fact of giving cards, it means I have to buy a card, write it, wrap it, and send it in the mail as opposed to buying a gift, wraping and handing it to the reciver on Christmas Morning. But I would rather get a card of money than a crappy gift for Christmas, wouldn't you? I do like getting presents more but better a pretty cool card than something I would return or never wear or use.

I would probably rather get a gift card than most gifts I end up getting. I get really excited to go to all the after Christmas sales when I get gift cards.

I prefer to get gift cards from people who don't know me well enough to know what I would like, but if it is someone that I know really well then I prefer to get an actual gift because it is much more personal. I really like gift cards when it comes to relatives though, when gift cards weren't so popular I used to get ugly clothes from my grandmother! Now I can just pick out my own clothes - much nicer!

I would rather get a $5.00 gift card than a sweater I'll never wear or a tea set I won't use or some other thing that has no personal meaning. Some people are just hard to buy for.

I don't have a problem with gift cards, if it's for a store I shop at. If it's for some place I'd never go, then it's kind of useless. Better that than a gift I'd never use in a hundred years.

Cash is nice, but i spend cash way too quick. So gift cards! And gift cards generally look nicer and it shows that ther giver actually put some thought into what card from which store to get you. Also...i love having gift cards to put into my wallet. No idea why, but i sort of collect them! =]

I like them but I think you have to know what card to give what person so they will use it.

I get Chapter gift cards every year because everyone knows I love reading. I give my Dad one every year from Staples and he goes and gets some gadget for his computer he is too cheap to buy himself (ha, ha). My neices and nephew are always up for a gift card from HMV and my one neice gets a prepaid phone card because her parents make her pay her own cellphone bill.

They are also a lot cheaper and easier to send through the mail than a package.

So...I like them any way I look at it.
