Waxing Nostalgic?

I've been thinking of the old days, growing up. I had the honor of listening to Dan Kelly, Sr. and Noel Picard broadcasting another barnburner from Oakland Avenue on KMOX radio. Whenever Mr. Kelly had to run off and do NHL work, a certain John Francios Buck would sometimes try his hand at play-by-play, proving he was more than just a baseball and football icon! Sadly, when Dan died of cancer, a huge hole was left in the hockey world and his sizable shoes were attempted to be filled by Ken Wilson.

Don't get me wrong, Mr. "Oh, Baby!" was a capable fill-in, but like any veteran replacing a legend, he was never given the reception he deserved, even though he stayed for a long time.

My question is do you have such fond memories? I know Canadians have Don Cherry. New Yorkers/New Jerseyans have Doc Emery. And so forth. I mean TRUE legends!

Update:

For those unfamiliar with broadcasting legends, John Francios Buck IS Jack's given name. He's in the Baseball AND Football Halls of Fame for his work.

I miss the tandem of Gene Hart and Don Earle for the Flyers. Gene was very knowledgeable and enthusiastic, and Don was my kind of guy. Once, during a game at the Nassau County Coliseum, he was doing some intermission work. Behind him some Islander fans were getting rowdy and shouting. So Don said something to the effect of "Gene, I don't know if you can hear me over these Islander Idiots...."

There are announcers from other sports as well, and my favorite tandem was Harry Kalas and Richie Ashburn. I'm no fan of the Phillies but I watched them just to listen to "Harry and Whitey" wax nostalgic and to otherwise carry on when the pitchers were in control of the games.

My other favorite was Tom Brookshier and Pat Summerall doing the 1:00 football games on CBS.

I remember Dan Kelly doing games on NBC and I always enjoyed his work. Truly one of the greatest play by play guys in NHL history.

I got to hear Foster Hewitt some before he retired. Foster as you know was the guy who invented hockey play by play.

The guy I miss the most is Danny Gallivan. We didn't get a lot of Montreal games in Ontario but his little phrases like "Spinnerama" & "Cannonading Drive" were magic.

I enjoy Joe Bowen's work now. He has some colorful phrases and certainly gives the game some extra life.

I also miss the guy who did the Bluejays games from game one until cancer took him not so long ago, Tom Cheek. He gave us over 20 seasons and called two world series victories. Cherished memories.

Honestly, we used to get Dan Kelly and I thought he was a bad Bill Hewitt. I never liked him. John Back? OK, I know Jack Buck and Joe Buck...any Buck si terrible. What is it about St. Louis for awfully annoying annpucers--Garagiola, McCarver, Caray, etc.

Best hockey pbp guy ever was Danny Gallivan period.

Don Cherry is just a talking head not a pbp guy. He's grandpa irrelevant now really.

Doc Emrick is also hideous with his "counters it off the boards" or "sashays thru the neutral zone."

Check out Tom Foley in Chicago. He's tops.

Well, Sabres fans have Rick Jeanneret as play by play(I'm too young to remember Ted Darling), and I really don't want to think about him retiring. It will be a very sad day for Sabre fans- he is worshiped in Buffalo. Hopefully Harry Neale can convince RJ to stay a while longer- it seems like they have fun together calling the game. Without RJ, a Sabres game won't be the same.

Also, I will remember watching hockey night in Canada with my grandpa every week when I was little. I don't get CBC anymore, and I miss it.

I consider Hall of Famer Gene Hart a legend. He did play by play for the Flyers for 29 years, from the start of the franchise until 1995.

"The Flyers are going to win the Stanley Cup! The Flyers win the Stanley Cup!" In my opinion that ranks right behind Al Michaels call of "Do you believe in miracles?"

The call is in the first 30 seconds of this audio clip.

Dan Kelly was a great Canadian. KMOX was lucky to have him.

Kelly called one of the most famous goals in Canadian television history. when he called Mario Lemieux's goal that ended the 1987 Canada Cup.

A truly great announcer who died way too young!
