What are some good used vehicles for under $5,000?
I am looking for a SUV or car that will be used for work and college transport. I want to pay cash for the vehicle.

Sad to say, anything domestic (Ford, Chevy, Dodge, etc) in that price range will most likely give you grief & you'll end up using your much needed college money to service the vehicle. I'm not knocking the domestic market automakers, it's just that reliability isn't something in the forte of local automakers. With that said, try looking into something Japanese-made like Honda, Toyota, or even Nissan. Best bet would be to obtain the vehicle's vin # and check it our on carfax so you can see the vehicles history. Best of luck with your decision....
Source(s): Personal. I've owned different Hondas & Toyotas over the years. 2 of which are still being used by my kids for college & h/s respectively. As far as domestic, I do have a pristine '66 Mustang that I've owned since the kids were young (previous owner was my father). But that's as far as I'll go for a domestic car...lol - 1 decade ago
Definately take a look at the Honda Civic or Toyota Corola. Both of those cars are known for their reliability and cheapness. Browse through www.autotrader.com and put in that price range and just see what pops up to give you an idea of what is out there.

Look in www.autotrader.com in your area. I bought a Ford Escort and it has been a good vehicle, you can find good cars, like Cavalier, Escort,...
Take care with some imports and it can be raced, so you will need to check carfax and take the car to a mechanic or go with a relative or friend who knows a bit about cars.
Good luck.

I only drive Hondas so I would suggest you get an Accord or a Civic. You can buy a brand new Mitsubishi Lanser for 5,000usd though.
