GPS, do you pay a monthly contract fee, or is the purchase of the item the only cost?

Of the more popular lower cost Garmin and TomTom's what is recommended. I travel in my local area for work and we are planning on Driving to Disney World from Texas this Spring? Which of the lower cost models is recommended?

Portable GPS units don't have fees unless you get one with traffic updates (TomTom one XL or TomTom 720) If you don't need this, the tomtom one 3rd edition is good. If you want one that tells you the names of the streets out loud, the Garmin Nuvi 260 is good. Oh, and you can purchase celebrity voices for the TomTom such as Mr. T, Burt Reynolds, Homer Simpson, etc. I think they're about $10 a voice.

Unless you want to get updates as maps change.
