Who's responsibility for cost when working with an architect?

wondering what others felt about covering the cost of materials when an architect orders expensive slate for your bathroom, without showing it to you and you hate it and it has to be replaced. I don't feel I'm responsible for the first slate as I never saw it, and to my eye it doesn't match anything in the room.

I am in the trades and it is my policy to not buy, or install anything the homeowner did not approve, unless specifically authorized to. It sounds like this Architect has made a design choice w/out your approval and you should not be held liable for the costs of installation, or replacement. However, if you still want to work with him you are in a bit of a quandry. My suggestion would be get copies of all the documentation, and go shopping for another Architect that will listen to your plans and ideas, not make up his own mind on what you want in your home. Look at some of the links I have provided.

what does your contract say? If there is no contract, well he just bought himself some slate!

And may I ask why an architect is ordering anything? They are supposed to draw plans and give suggestions, your contractor should be doing the ordering and labor.

You are supposed to be approving everything put into the house. If you did not approve it, he pays for it unless your agreement gave him free reign to design.
