In 1973, rebounding statistics changed. What was the deal - a rules change? A scoring change? Or what?

The number of rebounds credited to players was reduced for some reason starting in 1973. Was there a change in the definition of a rebound? Or did some other new rule affect things - such as tighter goaltending rules or a wider lane?

Update:

This is college ball. Something occurred that caused the NCAA to record fewer individual rebounds. The rebounding stats are listed as "before 1973" and "starting in 1973."

I couldnt remember any rebounding rule changes, much less any rule changes that would reduce the number of rebounds being credited to a player, that occured in 1973.

I believe steals and block though were first officially counted though during the 1973-74 season.
