Why do people get so freaked out when they see a dead body?

Survival instinct.
We see a dead body and we relate it to danger and and death and have an natural reaction. Our senses are heightened and our heart rate goes up, even if we know there is no danger. Our ancestors would come across a body and it would mean an enemy or predator was nearby, so their adrenaline would pump up, and they would react. Today we don't have as many predators, but we still 'get freaked' when we see a dead body as a natural defense mechanism.

I agree with those who say it is a reality call, mortality and the realization that the mortal being doesn't last always. As I have gotten older and with certain educational and occupational training, I still haven't gotten the total feel for it and I don't think I ever will. God Bless.

Maybe it's because death was never talked about when they were growing up. It was another one of those "tabu" subjects. If parents would teach their children that death is a part of what happens in life, maybe they wouldn't be so afraid to see the deceased. This happens so much in our society. It's a shame.
