I got two pet mice when I was in high school. The guy at the pet store said they were both females, but guess what? One of them wasn't.
The little couple bred rapidly, as did their babies, and their babies! I was building cages as fast as I could, but it got out of control. Some eventually escaped, and were living inside my dad's garage. Their descendants were still living free some years later, when my parents sold the house and moved away!
It was a great chance to observe genetics in action, though. Of the original two mice, one was white, the other black & white. All of their babies were brown, but the next generations produced mostly brown, but some white, a few black, and a couple which were brown & white. But I never saw another black & white mouse.
And I was able to sell a lot of the babies back to the pet store, for something like ten cents each, which I then used to buy more mouse food! Not exactly a big profit making venture, but it was fun for several years.
Anyway, to answer your question, keep them in a cage, not too small, with an exercise wheel. Put shredded newspaper in the bottom of the cage, and change it daily. Feed them mouse food from the pet store.
The mice were never "cuddly," though. They didn't like being held or petted, and would pee on my hand, and some would try to bite me. If you're looking for unconditional love, a cat or dog would be better.
And if you end up with a male and a female, be sure to buy some very tiny condoms!
Good luck!

I have just bought my two first pet mice and i think they're brilliant! So far i know of no cons except it would be best to buy them from breeders where they will know for sure what sex they are selling you, they will be looked after well and already handled so alot friendlier and easier to tame. My mice cost $3 each and i payed $35 for the cage but there were some as cheap as $25, the food was about $2, it is best to buy rat food as it has everything in it a mouse needs where as hamster food wont really do them any harm but is no way near as good for them. They hay and sawdust (use a small amount of sawdust) is about $5 for them both and I got very large bags. They also need some toys like a wheel (probebly will come with cage), a little house, things like that they wont come to more than a couple of pounds. They also like to eat fruit and vegetables as well as many other things like pasta, cornflakes, you can even get recipes for them. They are in my opinion brilliant pets and once they are completely tame can even come out of their cage often (as long as there are no other pets around) I advise you to get two females as two males wil probebly not get on as well togethor. hope i helped :)
p.s i may be a little out on the prices as this is not my currency but not by much

All you need is a cage with good ventilation (not a glass tank) but without large openings they can escape from (hamster cages work well).
For bedding you can use aspen or something made from paper like carefresh. Pine and Cedar are toxic and will kill them slowly. Never use either of these ever. Clean out completely once a week. Wash the base each week with hot water and a dish soap. Make sure to dry completely before putting bedding back as is can beggin to grow mold. The first answer is totally wrong when they said they stink. If they do smell, they need aa cage cleaning, or in some cases better quality food. I have had mice for years, and if you put in the effort, they do not smell strong. Males are often stinkier than females though, but if you want more than one, I would only get females as not to risk males fighting.
Food seems to be a huge contriversy. The seed mixes labeled for rodents at pet stores are the worst thing you can possibly feed them. Not only that, but they are often infested with bugs, making the mice ill. Only feed lab blocks. These are nutritionally balanced, and ensure the mice get a well balanced diet. There are of course low quality lab blocks as well, so as a general rule, avoid the cheapest brand. And only but the blocks labeled for mice/rats, not other animals.Poor diets shorten lifespans and may contribute to odor problems.
Water should be cheanged at least twice a week, and always available.
Ensure you have a wheel that is not barred, but solid all around, as they can get caught and injured in those. Also add some empty boxes for them to chew and hide in. Cloth works great as well for shreding. Avoid giving them anything plastic.
When you first get them, don't try to handle them or bother them at all for the first few days. They will be very stressed, and need the time to get to know their home first. Once you notice they are moving around a bit more comfortably, you can then start to slowly touch them, or even just talk to them so they get used to you being around. They aren't something you can hold comfortably, an females aspecially are very darty, so only do so for a few minutes each day as not to overwhelm them.
There are no official pros and cons. It's up to your personal prefference and abilities to decide whether you like caring for mice. Please be considerate of this, and don't just buy them and end up neglecting them or giving them away when you get sick of the work.

Pros - they are cute and fun to watch
Cons- they chew anything, they breed faster than rabbits, they smell, they get colds and influenza, they can escape most containers
We bought our daughter 2 cute white mice for $1.29 each . At only a few weeks old the female was already mature and pregnant.(averages 35-50 days of age) They chewed through the plastic cage ( we had to invest in an aquarium with a tight lid).
Within 8 months we had 300 cute white mice and many, many aquariums taking over our family room ( they interbred if not separate immediately after weened) and were begging pet shops to take some of them.

Congrats on the choice, mice/rats are so much like us humans. 10 gallon fish tank with HEAVY wire mesh cover is recommended. Litter should be pine not cedar (try to sift the litter b4 use, mice/rats have very delicate respiratory systems) water bottle or Heavy crock bowl for drinks, feed small amounts to prevent food taint. DO NOT give the store bought food for hamsters (it is nutritionally inadequate). Hunt down Monkey Chow (not for monkeys) It's rather hard to come by in some areas but try to get it. add a few drops of small animal vitamins to water. Running wheel is optional start-up item, yet recommended add-on. THAT'S IT -simple huh? Follow these guidelines for success. I did and literally had HUNDREDS of mice/rats for pets over 20 years, during my teen years most of my pay from working at a pet shop went to MY pets' upkeep, DON'T be discouraged, a start-up as I described will set you back about $30. KEEP MALES AND OR FEMALES SEPARATED for obvious reasons. Expect about 3-4 yrs lifespan (all mine lived long lives). The only cons are as follows: slight odor, noise from squeaky exercise wheel! Best of luck --IC
