HDTV channels from Basic cable?
I have just bought a HDTV. I connected the Comcast basic cable to it and ran the channel search. Then I can watch some channels like 2.1, 5.1, 7.1, etc. They are very clear. Am I receiving HD channels? I have thought to get a HD upgrade from Comcast. So seems I don't have to, right? Thank you for your time.

OH THOSE ARE HD CHANNELS my friend...that you can believe....
So don't let these others FOOL YOU....
But here's the problem....you ONLY have LOCAL HD TV stations and you're missing the Benefits of the Box.....the HD CABLE BOX....
Discovery channel, Science Channel, Animal Planet - HD, TLC-HD, Fox HD, ESPN -HD FOOD -HD HD Net....and a few others that I can't remember or don't care to.....
It's not a lot of channels. at least until 2012 but it's progressing

Your TV has an ATSC digital tuner in it, meaning you're actually receiving digital stations. Some of them may be HD - some not. Though digital stations generally look better than analog, anyway - even if they are still broadcast in 480i. I received the same channels when I connected my cable directly to my HDTV. I even got the on-demand station, but I couldn't interact with it (had to have a box). It was on a channel like 95.33562 or something. Of course, I have an HD box now (HD channels are free w/ my cable service).
IRT TVTech - not all digital channels are HD - some are still broadcast in 480i. However, the binary (square wave) nature of digital broadcasting creates a better image than analog (sin wave) w/ noise. I don't doubt that some or even all of his digital channels coming in MIGHT be HD - but there's no way you could know for sure unless you knew where he lived and checked.

You 'can' get some HD channels w/an antennea... we've done when we move and cable hasn't been set up yet.
Your tv if plasma is just coming in A LOT nicer than what used to.
But yes, there is a diff between the 400 HD channels and the 'reg' channels esp w/HBO, etc..
You'll notice the diff..trust me..

Some newer HDTVS will automatically pick up high def channels directly from the cable. That is what your tv is doing, but it will pick up more with the comcast package.

your tv may be upconverting the picture, which isn't QUITE HD content. Basically it takes a normal picture and enhances it as much as it can using its limited capabilities. If you want TRUE HD content you will need to get the HD equipment as its the only way to descramble the digital programming.

You need a box from them, period. You probably broke theirs so they want paid for it, and they won't supply you with another until you make good on the broken one, or pay a deposit in case you break it again. They don't just sell their boxes.

HD Channels are not aired on basic cable. You arent watching anything close to HD channels unless you upgrade your cable.

those are digital over the air channels...they're the ones you would be able to get if you had a conventional tv with an antenna.
