Hard Drive PROBLEM!?

OK my laptop hasn't been working for a few months now for unknown reasons. But the bottom line is: i try to reformat and stuff but it says no hard drive found so it can't reformat. =/ If you're wondering what happens when i boot my laptop, when I turn it on, it doesn't go to the windows screen (where windows XP is loading) it just stays black with a white dashed line blinking int he corner. However, I am able to boot up a linux Live CD (backtrack 2 and knoppix both work) and able to go online and stuff with them. So i dunno is my hard drive broken? or still working in a way? any ideas?

ok sound like its booting up to dos. I suspect you have a loose hard drive, which means lifting up the keyboard, should be clips at front on each side, power pack and hard drive are going to be the 2 largest objects in there. You may have to remove a few components to get to hard drive, could be on bottom or top pending on brand, just make sure it is plugged in properly give it a firm push, replace all other components doing the same thing. Close keyboard and try turning on laptop. hopefully it will boot up normally. If it doesn't work your drive could have crashed. good luck

You can't reformat your laptop hard disk because is broken or something is going wrong into him that your laptop cannot detect it.
