My daughters new doll smells like an ashtray, how do I....?
....get the smell out?
My mother in law smokes in her house, it stinks! Every gift she she gives my daughter smells to some degree like cigarettes and cheep perfume. Most things have been clothing or something that I can wash once or twice and the smell is gone. However, this year she got my daughter an Ariel doll and it STINKS! I've managed to get the smell out of the doll's clothing (washed 2 times) but its hair and body still smell awful after 3 washings! I think the oder has become one with the plastic!?!?
Is there anything I can do to get the smell out?
Thanks.
No, we don't live with her!!! We rarely associate with her. Sometimes she gets things and has them for a few months in her house before we get around to seeing her. My husband wants to expose her as little as possible to our daughter, for reasons that are too lengthy to get in to at this time.
I'd like to just throw it away but my daughter really loves Ariel and wants to play with it! Sadly, the smell transfers to her when she holds the doll (thats the worst part). After the 2nd washing she held the doll for about one minute then said "mommy, Ariel's head smells like yuck"
What to do? I'd buy a new one and replace it if I could find one...
Tried Febreeze yesterday...didn't work. The doll now smells like Febreeze and smoke!
I've tried shampoo & conditioner too. The doll is currently soaking in a bucket of hot water and laundry detergent. The bucket water now smells like the doll!?!?!
Well, let me say thanks for all the great answers. There are a few I'm gonna try.
I'm not sure which to pick as best answer so I'm putting it up for a vote.
AGAIN, THANKS FOR THE HELP.

Do you live with your mother-in-law? If so you're out of luck. I know of no way to get the stink out.

Have you tryed using Febreeze on the doll? (the one that is for fabric) Even washing the doll with Murphy's Oil Soap should help get the odor out of the plastic. Have you tryed shampoo on the doll's hair? I can't stand the smell of cigarettes & can't be around smokers. Their homes & cars gag me!!! Is it possible to buy a new doll & toss out the new one, without your daughter or m-in-law knowing?

Instead of fabreeze in a trash bag with the doll. Try dryer sheets. My husband is a nurse at a local hospital. He works the intensive care unit and they hang dryer sheets in the rooms. I did this with a piece of furniture I bought at a garage sale I put the dryer sheets in the drawers and eventually the cigarette smell went a way. I kept changing the dryer sheets. It did work the furniture does not smell.

May be try putting it in the oven, dont turn the oven on, with a bowl filled with water and baking soda.
If it dosent go away then, Im sure it eventually will.

I would dry the doll completely, then place in plastic bag and place in freezer for a few days, or outside in cold if you live in that kind of climate. that worked for our daughters varsity jacket that she wore to friends for the weekend and the parents smoked.

No way but i think that's a bit over the edge if you washed it once that should be plenty. Find something else to waste time on
