Bruised Toenail?

While moving, I dropped a shelf on my big toe and now, after a couple of days, it's bruised underneath the nail and there's a little bruising around the nail. I heard about drilling a hole to release pressure and about waiting ten months to grow it out. But how can you take care of it while you're waiting for it to heal and how can you grow it faster? How long will the pain last? I'm planning to participate in a sport that involves running in about a month...is it okay to participate by then...? If the pain is gone?

Drill a hole?? I've never heard of that.

My daughter dropped a table on her toe, and her whole toenail turned purple. The nail never did fall off though and it's healing just fine. The doctor told her to put a cold compress on it and to leave it alone. He said he could pull off the nail, but that the nail is a protective cover for the bruise and bleeding and that it was best to keep it on, and that if it were to fall off, it should fall off on it's own.

Hopefully it'll all be back to normal by the summer. It did take several weeks before she could walk on it normally, I don't know about you running on it. Depends on how much it hurts by then.
