US Presidents who owned slaves.?

It has been said to me that Lincoln was the first US president who never owned slaves. I consider this false, and don't believe either Adams, father or son, owned slaves, nor Van Buren, nor Pierce, nor Harrison.

Is there anybody out there who can document that I'm right, or that my correspondent is right?

Lincoln did not own slaves. Twelve other Presidents did have slaves with Grant being the last one. Not all of them actually had slaves while serving as President.

George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, James monroe, Andrew jackson, Martin Van Buren, William Henry Harrison, John Tyler, James Polk, Zachary Taylor, Andrew Johnson, Ullyses Grant are all listed as slave holders.

The first president to not own slaves was John Adams.

Van Buren and Harrison did not own slaves during their presidency.

Johnson and Grant freed theirs prior to the Civil War

I don't know for sure about the Presidents you listed; but I do know that George Washington did(set them free in his will); and Thomas Jefferson did(but he didn't set them free in his will). He was essentially bankrupt when he died.
