Should I take my 2 month old to the E.R.? running a fever?
I have a 2 month old baby... a week away from being 3 months old. He weighs 17 pounds and is overall very healthy. He has been running a fever for the last two to three days. I took him to the ER yesterday and at that time only had a fever of 100 and also has a bad cough and congestion. They sent me home and told me to administer tylenol every 4 hours. Now, he has a rectal temperature of 103.9 (so adjusted that is 102.9) Should I take him back in to get checked out or should I just keep an eye on it? I just simply don't want to drag my baby out to the hospital at 2 A.M. just to be sent home with nothing again! One quick thing, he doesn't have an ear infection... they looked at this yesterday. I need answers quick! I need to make a decision of what to do.

3:00 here, now. Maybe your time is different.
103.9 rectally is worrisome in an infant that young. If you have tried medicine and cool baths/cloths to reduce the fever and those things are not working then your child needs to see someone. Don't be intimidated by the ER staff. The concerned mother is the one whose child LIVES.

If your son has a fever for 2 months, it would be a good idea to take him to the ER. If it hasn't gone away after that long it could be something worse. Better be safe than sorry, right?

That thermometer that I got you automaticly adjusts depending on what tip is attached to it. So if it read 103.9 it IS 103.9. You should take him in.

102.9 is very serious take em in asap. 103.9!!!!!thats almost 104.00 rectal temps are not adjusted they are the most accuarate and that kind of temp is running close to brain damage. dont mean to scare you. but 104 for you or me means brain damage a baby its much more severe.

I would go back to the ER. For the future, have you been diligent with the Tylenol, giving cooling baths, have you tried Vick's baby rub, a humidifier, etc. Ask the ER for specific things to do to help your baby. Good luck!

I agree. Take him to the ER. This is a very serious matter. I am sure they'll be able to figure it out soon. I hope everything turns out okay and you're both in my thoughts and prayers.
