Family tree? How can I reasearch without having to pay for the searches?

I have wanted to find out my family history since I were 18 because at that time I found out that I had other brothers. I am now 45 and have been at a loss for 27 years and now I am on a mission but I don't have lots of $$ and I know it isn't that much to pay for some of the searches but still would like to find the info out. Story is I am the only child from my Mother and Father and I always knew I had two other older brothers by the same Mother but when I was 18 I met one that was adopted and found out that we may have had up to three more siblings by my Mother. Please help!

I've been researching my family history for a couple of years, and the good thing is that you can leave it for a few months, and then pick it up again with fresh eyes. You might find something you didn't see before, or if you get stuck on one branch, you can trace another. This is also good, because you don't need to have all the money at once. I was paying little amounts every now and then, so it never seemed like a bit pay out. I have hardly any spare cash, and I found it relatively easy to spare £10/$20 here and there when you want something. It is fairly addictive though, so make sure you give yourself a monthly budget before you get carried away! And history's not going anywhere; so it's not like you only have a year to do it.

To get more answers, I think you should repost this question in the genealogy section. I have been researching my famlily history, and I have found that you have to pay for the majority of the services on offer. Up until quite recently I was only paying out for my annual membership to Genes Reunited. If you're lucky, like I was, you will find someone with the same relations in their tree, and you can get more info from them. All you need to have is as much information as possible from your own family. So get information from all your relatives still alive, and sign up to one of the websites (like Genes Reunited or Ancestry). They let you build a tree free, and you only need to pay to contact other people. I think Genes charges £10 (approx $20/yr), but you'll have to look into this. For this, you can contact people and have access to the information online. You have to pay extra to view census results though, and this is where I spent most of my money. I soon found FreeBMD though (link below), which lists results from births, marriages and deaths. It is done by volunteers though, so it;s not complete yet, but certainly worth a check before you buy credits from Genes and Ancestry.

also I found a couple of books really useful for my research, written by the genealogist Anthony Adolph. I think he writes about English history, so you might be better off looking on Amazon for genealogy local to your family's roots.

Message me if you would like some more information, although most of my information is centred around my English research.
