Impala VIN engine decoding?
There is a local impound auction that has listed a couple interesting cars, 1969 Pontiac Executive 400, 1969 Grand Torino GT (with a 390, 2v unfortunately) and a 1970 Impala.
Problem is I havent been able to decode the VIN, I know there are engine codes on the block and prob a build sheet/plate on the car. But no websites will tell me much more than its a "low production V8". (BTW, I cannot see the cars until the day of the auction, so I'm trying to do as much research as I can before hand so I might be able to find a gem of an engine/trans)
Here is the VIN they have listed for it (I do know its a 2 door from the VIN) 164370T173028
Anyone have any clues?
thanks guys for all the info, guess I better download all the engine codes so I can figure out which engine it has when I show up there
I concur about GEMS, have you done a search on eaby with 69 grand torino parts?!?!? they are rediculous prices for just a couple peices of trim..... should be interesting b/c cars rarely go past 300 bucks at this auction

the VIN number you have put up go as this 1 stand for chevy, 6437 stands for body style, 0 is the last number in the year, T is the plant, and the 173028 is the number that was built but the numbers started at 100000 so your was the 73028 impala built of the 1970s model year.
chevy didn't start putting the engine codes on the VIN tell 1972
sorry i cant help you more
one there was no 305 in 1970 and there was 307, some of the Early 1970s had a 327and dz302, 350 and 400 and in the big block there was the 396 only in the first part of the 70s that made way for the 402 and there's the 427 and was in alot of 1970 impala's and the 454 but that was only in the SS

Hey,the only way to find out is with a build sheet...maybe you could ask if the car comes with one.
I have a 69chevelle396ss and the vin tells me nothing at to what size engine came in the car.It doesn't even tell me if it's an ss or not.GM never kept the records on the Vin. either
anyway,your vin...
1=Chevy
6=Impala
4=V8
37=2 door sport cp.
0=1970
T=tarrytown NY
last 6 digets are the cars serial
Good luck!

there are only a few engine packages that went into the impala during those years. 305, 350, 396?, 400, 454. if it's not an SS you can eliminate the 454 & 396. "low production" cancels out the 305. research the other 2 engines see what they're worth. when you get there the air cleaner should have the enging size on it or a sticker on the valve cover.

The absolutely free reverse vin check sites generally provide fake information. To get real information, money will have to be paid. The free searches provide fake information so they can get your email address to send spam.
Stay away from shady reverse vin check sites, most likely you won't get any information after you make the payment. Not to mention you won't get a report and you won't get an answer if you try to call for a refund. Stick with a reputable reverse vin check site like http://www.reversevincheck.net/ that has been around since 1995.

All good answers! sorry to tell you that there aint any Gems in the lot other than land yachts especially the Executive. you might get lucky with the impala having a "big block"

call your local GM garage and see what the service department can tell you. also, try an impala club, if there is such a thing, they will be able to help GOOD LUCK
