Why do Red Sox fans...?

...always have nothing but new caps and jerseys? I mean, its obvious these fans are fans when they win the World Series, and their are so many on the bandwagon.

How come I don't see anyone with a Fred Lynn jersey? Or, a Dwight Evans jersey, or a Mo Vaughn jersey for that matter?

Probably for the same reasons you don't see Yankee fans wearing Chris Chambliss, Graig Nettles, or Danny Tartabull jerseys.

    It's 2008, not 1975, 1988 or 1997.

p.s. I have the following jerseys in my closet - Jim Rice, Nomar Garciaparra and a throwback Ted Williams. Not to mention my Yaz painter's hat from the late 70's.

I get what you are trying to say. The Red Sox have a large following of bandwagon fans now that they have won the World Series 2 times in four years. But the evidence that you have against these fans can be used for most teams. When I go to Yankee games, I see a lot of Arod and Jeter jerseys. Those are all current players so obviously the merchandise is somewhat new. That doesn't mean that the whole stadium is full of bandwagoners. When you get a new player on your team that you are excited about, it's only natural to want to get their jersey.

The real way to point out a bandwagoner: when discussing baseball with them, the only "logical" sentences they can make are "The Yankees suck!" and "The Sox are the best team ever." Anything else and their heads start to hurt.

Not all Red Sox fans can afford to get or have jersery's and hats from those years. I myself have been a Red Sox fan since i was 5. I have a ton of cards but the hats and jersey's people grow out of. If i were to have a jersey of Ted William or someone well known do you really think it would be smart to wear it a lot and get it to the point where it might tear? It depends on the fan. Some fans do wear older jerseys but most do not. I mean you can't really accuse those who wear the 2004 WS championship stuff because it was a defining moment in Red sox nation. that is what i wear until it breaks or rips to games or parties, You can't call all Red Sox fans band-wagoners for celebrating a WS win.

also to point out something to those who said Yankee fans are more loyal that is not actually true, I've seen and read a lot of post about the New Stadium being something they are really looking forward too despite that the current stadium will be demolished afterwards and therefore all historic even there will be memories. the so called "house that Ruth built" will be gone leaving Fenway and Wrigley as the oldest parks left.

Wearing the jersey or a different era player doesn't indicate whether you're a bandwagon fan or not (common sense). Anybody can go out and buy a jersey. I buy a new hat each year the first game I go to (I've been going to games each year since 1984) and have Ted Williams apparell and even a Bill Buckner (or Rico Petrocelli) numbered jersey. There are plenty of bandwagon Red Sox fans and Yankee fans are just as guilty during their not so recent success.

Why aren't all the Yankee home games sold out??? Must not be too many true fans...

I agree with you to an extent on this question. Being that I am a HUGE Red Sox fan and (have been through it all) I think you make a valid point. Everybody out there who doesn't know baseball, but wants to take an interest...picks the REd Sox as their new "favorite team." Being a Red Sox fan now is almost a fad. It's kind of annoying for those of us who have actually cried when the Red Sox were those cursed, lovable losers.

I agree with you. There are a TON of bandwagon fans. I bet if you asked one of those Red Sox fans with a new jersey or hat on who their favorite players is....they'd probably say something vague like... "Oh, my favorite player, I like them all."

As for your questions about us not wearing a Fred Lynn or Dwight Evans jersey or Mo Vaughn...they probably aren't worn for the same reason Yankees fans don't wear David Cone, Chuck Knoblauch, or David Justice jerseys.

For the real Red Sox fans out there.... who wept in October, who screamed at the improbable, and looked up at the Yankees and the mystique of a so-called curse, you know who you are. The times have changed. The Red Sox now....seem to be on the winning end of things, as opposed to being the team in the other dugout.

I have a new hat because I wanted a Red Sox World Series cap...plus I like to get a new on field cap every year...does that make me a bandwagon fan? According to your standards yes but considering my first Red Sox game was in 1985 I guess I have been a Red Sox bandwagon fan my entire life.

Kris, you're an idiot. The year has nothing to do with what Jersey you wear. I happen to wear my grandfathers old Munson Jersey. I also have a Mattingly and Tino Jersey that I wear. I see people at the Stadium all the time wearing Boggs, Wells and even Piniella jerseys, along with Jeter, Arod and Cano jerseys. Fans who know their teams history and have a respect for their teams history still wear these Jerseys. Don't make up excuses for all the Red Sox bandwagoners.

Couldn't say. The only uniform clothing I have is a couple of caps, and my favorite (by far) is a fitted wool, 1975-style full red cap with navy visor.

If I could make one change to the Sox uni, it would be to restore that red cap. It was used 1975-78.

Red Sox fans just believe in continuing to support their beloved franchise. If we all wore jerseys that have been in our closet for years then we couldn't afford to keep going after high profile talent like Johan Santana.

I have lost my hat three times in the last four years just cause I have a new hat dosen't mean I'm a bandwagon fan.
