Do Atheists really exist?

Technically are there really atheists in the world? I mean, if you simply believe there is no God then you are Agnostic, which means if there was proof, then you would believe there WAS a god.

To TRULY say "I know there is no God". If you KNOW then you must be all knowing, which means you ARE a god and thus means you cannot (again) be atheist. Basically contradicting yourself. Right?

I mean, correct me if I am wrong. That is why I ask this. Please explain the FACTS. Because at this point, I really don't believe atheists exist.

Update:

I believe people exist that SAY they are atheists.

The word ‘atheism’ comes from the negative ‘a’ which means ‘no’ and ‘theos’ which means ‘god.’ it doesn't say "belief in gods" it says NO GOD.

In order to KNOW there is no God, is not possible. They simply BELIEVE. Just like a Christian believes wholeheartely that there is one. In order to KNOW there is no God, you would have to be like a god (all knowing). That was my point.

They will probably say that is circular reasoning, but it is valid when it is done to make (not prove) a point. Great job. I'm sure their heads are exploding right about now.

Your logic is seriously flawed. You're making up theorums to support your own assertions.

"Technically are there really atheists in the world? I mean, if you simply believe there is no God then you are Agnostic, which means if there was proof, then you would believe there WAS a god."

If you simply believe there is no god, then you are an atheist. An agnostic aknowledges the fact that there MAY be a god. Huge-o difference.

"To TRULY say "I know there is no God". If you KNOW then you must be all knowing, which means you ARE a god and thus means you cannot (again) be atheist. Basically contradicting yourself. Right?"

The fact that I KNOW it's been raining all day here doesn't make me all-knowing. To be all-knowing does NOT make one a god- you are simply using the belief that the Christian deity is all-knowing to make an assumption that to be a god, you are all-knowing.

  • I think you might be stretching it, because I don't see how you would have to know everything to know that God doesn't exist. But, admittedly, knowing for certain that something doesn't exist is practically impossible. However, that doesn't mean that there are no atheists. An atheist doesn't have to know or pretend to know that there is no god, but simply has to believe (or, in Douglas Adams' terms, be convinced) that there isn't. Agnosticism is unfortunately an extremely difficult topic, which I can't fully explain here. An agnostic may be theist or atheist, but claim not to have proof for his position, and may also think that such proof would never be available (on the theist side this is called fideism), but may also just suspend judgement about the existence of god altogether, be a "true agnostic" so to speak.

Believing there is no god is not only NOT agnostic it's gnosticism. To put it in another way it's atheist-gnosticism and most atheists aren't in this position.

Atheism is absence of belief in a god or gods. EVERY person is an atheist to some god out there. For example, Christians are atheist to all gods but one. An atheist in the typical meaning just goes one god further.

Note: All agnostics believe or disbelieve. Agnosticism is only about lacking knowledge. Agnosticism is not a position in and of itself. All agnostics are still either atheist or theist.

It's not that difficult to look these two terms up in a dictionary and answer your own question. From http://www.m-w.com/

atheist: : one who believes that there is no deity

agnostic: a person who holds the view that any ultimate reality (as God) is unknown and probably unknowable; one who is not committed to believing in either the existence or the nonexistence of God or a god

The differences and similarities between the two are quite clear.

And yes, there are atheists. I am one. I do *not* say "There is no god, period." Rather I say, "I do not think there is a god." An agnostic would simply say "I do not know, and neither does anyone else."

An atheist is a person who is convinced that there is no god (in just the same way that a Christian is a person who is convined of the divinity of Jesus or a Moslem is a person convinced that Mohammed was God's greatest prophet).

An agnostic is a person who is convinced that it is impossible to tell which of the many religious positions in existence is the true one. That is quite different from being convinced that no god exists, although of course it will lead to the same absence of any displays of religious behaviour and so may appear the same for practical purposes.

First off do me a flavour and stop listening to Roy Comfort and Kirk Cameron, they're really out to lunch not to mention they twist facts around to support their POV.

An agnostic is one that doesn't know if there's a gawd or not. Not one that doesn't believe in gawd. They say that there simply is no way of knowing so they sit on the fence and lord it over those on either side.

An atheist simply doesn't believe there's a gawd. Much in the same way you don't believe there's a Santa Claus. Or are you saying that you're agnostic concerning Santa?

To truly say you don't believe in something means that as far as you can see, there's no proof for such a thing existing. Nothing more, nothing less.

In the same way that I believe there is no Loch Ness Monster, I believe there is no gawd.

Please check your dictionary. An atheist is someone who doesn't believe in gods. An agnostic says that the existence of a god is unknown and probably unknowable.

Your second paragraph is flawed logic. There is no prerequisite that you be "all-knowing" to not believe. The burden of proof that there is a god is on you.

BTW - I am an atheist and I do exist.

    Your logic is flawed

Now go look up atheist in the dictionary.

Atheism: a lack of belief in the existence of God or gods

An agnostic does not disbelieve in god outright. You got the definitions confused.

ADDENDUM: Yes, in order to absolutely know it 100%, you have to have some sort of other worldly knowledge. But your question is stilled flawed because the definition of atheism is a BELIEF that there is no god, not absolute 100% accurate knowledge of it.

It's not much of a jump from agnosticism to atheism. People used to think volcanoes were the chimneys to Hephapastion's forge. Then they thought thunder was Thor banging clouds with his hammer. Right now the origin of life on earth has the scientists foxed, but once they've worked out how that happened another problem will have arisen that we aren't even aware of yet, and some people will explain it away with God. I say sod all that. There isn't a god.

The definition of "atheist" is "one who does not believe in the existence of God(s)"

It doesn't matter whether or not there actually *is* a God. If someone does not believe in the existence of God(s), then yes, they are atheist.

    Atheists really exist.
