Hey I got a violation! Cool! What do they mean by "placeholding"?

A couple of days ago I answered a young lady's question in this group about creative excuses for missing work. Just now received a violation notice for "placeholding". Never heard the term before. Is it because I added something to my answer? At first I posted a comment, then realized that I probably ought to answer the question. The whole process took maybe 5 minutes... to give a frivolous answer to a frivolous question... I can't imagine anyone even taking note of it.

Interestingly, the topic of the question was something about skipping work to get laid. Seems like some folks around here might benefit from that, no? ;-)

In any case, I noticed the recent chatter about such things and wanted to mention it to y'all (and ask a question, of course).

In the meanwhile, I'm gonna go take my own advice... ;-)

peace

Update:

BTW, Thanks in advance for answering!

Update 2:

Thank you allure45connie, that makes sense. I'm gonna have to try it...

Funny answer too Dory, I also wondered why I just got the notice tonight.

Thumbs up for both of you. See you tomorrow.

Update 3:

Excellent answers! I now know what placeholding means, and why it can be a problem. If I did anything wrong, I plead insanity! Thanks to all the young men and ladies here (this means you, Cheryl ;-)

Hard to pick a best answer, so I give it to Allure for explaining it to me first... without resorting to placeholding to do it...

peace

Some people post a period or some commas or a short remark in order to stake claim to an high placeing in the answers list . They think it gets the answere read more , gets it more thumbs up , and gives it a better chance of being selected for best answer .

I didn't know they had a name for it but I've come across "placeholding". A few times I've seen a poster post only a period (.) or say "be right back" or something similar, and then wait and edit the post after someone else posts a decent answer, changing it to almost exactly what the next poster writes. It makes it look like the person that followed them stole their answer, when in fact, it's the first poster that did. I can understand why that would be a violation, but that doesn't sound like what you did at all.

hmmm "placeholding" so they have a name for it

funny i just had that happen to me earlier tonight

it was really strange ...i posted an answer in the music forum to a question looking for the name of a song and the band with very little lyrics to go on

so i go there and there's like 3 or 4 answers already...it's a new question

all of the answers are like "hmm no clue" or "yep. you're right we need more to go on" and some joke one

so i think i know the band and i go to answer naming the band and song and add the chorus

well about a few minutes after i post i go back to check and see because the questioner was adding details and lo and behold WTH???

the first answer is different....it's now the name of the band i put only all in CAPS with a load of !!!!!!!!

took me a second to figure out what happened

so yeah...some people are sooooooooooooo LAME

but now i have a word for it

    peace :)

Never heard of that term, I'm clueless.

But Thank You for calling me a "young Lady" you've made my day.

I got a violation for calling someone a coward, for trolling Wally

Edit: Come to think of it I selected best answer on that question a couple days ago.

You may want to review who your contacts are, sounds like an inside job to me

I am a basic believer in freedom of speech. So getting a violation for anything seems inappropriate to me. But, there are those in the world who's insecurity bleeds over into their lives so much they have to do something to someone else to feel better.

OMG....I got my first violation today also. I didn't really answer a question, I just told them that I loved their "story", and i got a violation for not answering the question. So, I guess I better give you an answer so i don't get another violation. Your advice sounds like "the thing to do"....(*-*)

    "Place-holding"?

Now that is new to me!

Sounds like it is what "they" were doing if it took them 2 days to violate you!

Mind you, they probably "laid" it on the table and then decided!

They had to Nip it the Bud!

I will say Snip it in the Bud as they will remove "Nip"! For the 7th time!

Thanks for the info! Take care!
