The Cards signed Matt Clement on Jan 3rd, is this a good deal for them?

From ESPN "Clement gets a $1.25 million salary this year and can earn an additional $5.25 million in performance bonuses, receiving the full amount if he pitches 200 innings.

The Cardinals have an $8.75 million option for 2009 with a $250,000 buyout. The option would increase to $9 million and the buyout $500,000 if Clement reaches 160 innings this season; $9.5 million and $1 million for 180 innings; and $10 million and $1.5 million for 200 innings.

The option would become $11 million and the buyout $2 million if Clement finishes in the top five in 2008 Cy Young Award balloting."

Was this a good move by the Cardinals, a good gamble on their part or just another reclamation project that may not work out?

Given the dearth of pitching talent available, I think it's an inexpensive gamble for the Cardinals. The buyout amounts are almost negligible, so if he fails it's not like the Cards are on the hook for millions. And if he pitches well enough that they actually pick up the $9m option for 2009, then I think they'd be thrilled to have an effective pitcher.

He's only a couple of years removed from being a good pitcher, and at 33 he should still have plenty left for a few good seasons if he's healthy. I think it's a good move for the Cards, who generally make smart moves in the front office.

Without a doubt. The last time the Cards signed an injured pitcher it worked out pretty well. Cris Carpenter won the Cy Young Award. I'm not saying Clement will go that far, but he has shown promise in his career, which Dave Duncan has a way of bringing out in "servicable" pitchers. Look how good Jeff Suppan was for the Cards.

The thing is free agent pitching is at such a premium. Contracts are going crazy for unproven talents and mediocre guys. Clement has a decent history. If he recovers and pitches somewhat like his old self its a great deal. If he never gets back on track it was a low cost gamble that didn't pan out.

    It's a win win situation.

It is a good roll of the dice. Clement is very determined and wanted to come back for the Sox's postseason, but he ran out of time. Since he is going back to the national league I think he will start out strong. And then have a five hundred record the rest of the way.

The MLB talent pool of pitching is weak right now and the Cardinals rotation needs all of the help it can get.

It didn't cost them that much to sign him and the Cardinals need pitching. If it works out for them great, if not it didn't cost them much to see if he still has it. As an Astros fan I hope he doesn't.

Those are a lot of numbers and figures for a guy who doesn't put up great numbers and hasn't pitched since 2006.

No!! He gets injured way too much and he is inconsistent. He will probably have two great starts but then he will have five terrible starts. I think the Cardinals wasted their money on him
