What is this doodad on the ducati?

Hello,

I posted this picture:

http://www.crash.net/picture.asp?tid=&id=158512&pi...

in Barry's question to illustrate what a dumb question/statement was, but then, what an embarassment! I erm, we-eell, I don't actually know what it is. Do you?

I guessed radio thingy, something to do with ECU, or speed trap detector - but I'm clueless really.

Cheers

Update:

*** EDIT ***

I forgot!! All this talk of motogp - testing started today in WSBK's!

http://www.superbike.it/details.php?newsid=2048&la...

Whey hey - It's begun!

Update 2:

Well, I can't choose! It seems obvious that it's something electrical, but what's bugging me is how big and ugly it is (especially for a press launch!)

So I had a google and found this interesting article I thought I'd share (it's fairly current)

http://www.techonline.com/product/underthehood/202...

and if you blow up the picture you can see how small these things usually are so, wtf! You choose the best answer!

Hi Dingo. It looks like the antenae for the transponder, which is behind the nose.It looks rather obtrusive though. So my guess is as good as anyones.

Hi Dingo I'm going with Barry M on this one I think Its a real time transponder. bigger than the Required one for lap times. It is probably sending a heap load of data back to the boys in the pits. Didn't they put like radios in the back protectors once over. I think its the next step. I doubt it will be on the bike come racing. It would be a contravention of the tail dimensions.

Bloody hell that sounded like I knew. but I'm only guessing.

It could be a transponder used to monitor and track lap times throughout the race or practice session. These are common and necessary during motorcycle racing but this one looks like a much more expensive version than the ones we use.

Hmmm, Trying to solve the mystery of the "Black Box" on the back of the Ducati(did i spell it right).

Maybe it's a Cellular antenna for real time computer monitoring and diagnostics and communications and video relay(all in one smash proof box).... That's my best guess.

It is a windup screw. Non Harly Davidson's use this to power their bikes. Especially that Jap junk.
