Some clarification needed please?
Brother From The Lebanon posted this:
"We place a stone, because the Quran says, ina ja"alna al ard masjedan lil ebad, which means we made the earth a place of prostration for the believers".
~can anyone care to explain please, with evidences and I mean those evidences which are not weak, as I am not aware of this~
Thankyou!

That is Shia thing to justify the turba. They render "ardh" أرض only as soil, not as place. أرض means Earth, our planet, land... Soil is more like "turab" تراب .
This doesn't prove that one must prostrate on some piece of soil or stone or wood or whatever, unless you do taqlid of ayatolas and marjas. Their preference is to pray on stones from Karbala. There is no evidence to support the Shia claims unless you like I said, follow interpretations of shia priesthood.
But some Sunnis go into other extreme and pray on double or triple carpets which is again wrong. We should feel the hardness of the floor when we prostrate, but the place should be clean.

Please people, rid yourselves of all your prejudices about the shia and about the turba for five minutes and take that time to read the response by MUHAMMED. He has presented you with all the hadiths and facts that justify the prostration on the turbah and the hadiths he has quoted are all from Sunni sihah books so that you do not doubt the authenticity of the hadiths. I cannot add anymore detail to his answer as it is 100% what i believe. After reading that, weigh up the evidence logically and make your own judgement. I doubt whether you can still dismiss the prostration on the turba after that.
Thank you all and thank you MUHAMMED for your great answer.
God Bless You ALL!
EDIT: actually i would like to stress one of the points he made. It is regarding this section of one of the hadiths he quoted: "...The earth has been made a place of prostration for me, and a place to perform Tayammum...". Obeidullah stated above that us shia are wrong in believing the "ardh" (earth) referred to in numerous hadiths is soil only, he says that the "earth" referred to is the planet and not the soil. However, this hadith states that the earth has been made a "place of prostration for me and a place to perform Tayamum". Surely here, the word "earth" refers to soil only as i am sure you will ALL agree with me that Tayamum is performed with soil. therefore if it is referring to the earth as being soil and the Prophet is saying that this soil has been made "a place of prostration" for him, then surely the Prophet is saying that he prostrates on soil. So by prostrating on a turbah which is made of soil, we shia are only following the Sunnah of the profit. Now, where does the confusion lie?

He was referring to the turbah or mohr that we Shia Muslims use when doing salat. During sujud, we place our foreheads on it. We believe that it is wajib to place our foreheads on some earthen material in order for our salat to be haqq. The most popular form is the clay tablet. I do not agree with the methods emplyed by "A Shiite Encyclopedia," but I do know that somehwere in there someone provided some explanations for our use of the turbah in salat. The URL for it is http://www.al-islam.org/encyclopedia . If you cannot find the section on turbahs there, I will try to find something. Keep us posted in the edits.
EDITS:
shereen is confused about what is permissible for Shia Muslims to prostrate on. We are actually not allowed to prostrate on cloth or edible materials.

Ok ..those are shiaa .. I wonder on that explanation they gave
has nothing to do with putting a special stone to prostrate on it.
The real reason for using that stone which they prostrate on it is because they have one Hadith which prohibits to prostrate on something that can be eaten or can be worn .

Bismillahi Rahmani Rahim
Salaam Alailkum wa Rahmatullah
Purposely placing a stone in front of you in order to prostrate on it is a bida'ah, a reprehensible innovation, that has no foundation the Qur'an or authentic Sunnah. It is permissible to prostrate on bare ground, soil, mud, carpets, wall-to-wall carpets in houses, linoleum, and the like. This is the manner followed by the vast majority of Muslims, the 80% of Muslims who follow the way of the ahl as-Sunnah. Though prayer rugs are popular, they are not necessary for one's prayer to be valid. It is only necessary that the place of prayer be clean. Please do not trouble yourself with this issue. Our religion is a religion of moderation. And Allah knows best.
May Allah protect us from innovation and keep us on the Straight Path, Ameen.

The stone is made from a natural material as they believe they should pray Salat on a natural Material not unlike the Maaliki Madhaab who also believe in resting your head on a natural material in soojood.
My mother and father are Shia and they use the stone ( it is called a Turba) so that their forehead touches the stone when they prostrate themselves in prayer
