Mirena strings - length? softening?

Okay. I had a Mirena IUD put in on Wednesday. I was nervous after reading all the horror stories, but either have a really lax uterus or a really good doctor - no pain at all. Anyway, my question for all you other Mirena users is about the strings. How long should they be? When you go to check it, should you be able to find it really easy, or do you have to really go digging for it? I think my strings are really long. Does the length of the string effect your partners comfort level? If so, is it better longer or shorter? I've read that the strings soften with time... is that true? How long did it take?

Thanks!

Update:

I can feel the strings when inserting just the tip of my finger - only to the first knuckle. Should I be concerned that I've expelled this device?

The Mirena strings should be sticking out about half an inch. That makes them easy to locate, but less likely to poke you or your partner. Mine didn't soften up, that I could tell. I only had the IUD for a year, though. Have your gyno trim the strings for you.

When my doc put mine in he cut the strings very short. He told me that what the manufacturer recomends is way to long for most men and he was getting a lot of women coming in with complaints from there partners. He said he cut the strings all the way back and has had me come in for a check up to make sure it is in the right place since I cant check the strings. He sis say something about them softening up or curling up after a while but he just eliminates the problem altogether

My man has never been able to feel the strings during sex, most of the time I can't feel them either when I check for them. I have 2 friends who also have Mirena IUD's and both of them had to return to the doctor to have them shortened because thier spouses could feel them. Now one of them can't feel the strings to check and the other one can.

The strings don't necessarily shorten with time but the IUD will "settle" into place and that can change the length of the strings. Hope this helps.

Can't answer all of your q's because I'm a guy, but I can tell you that the discomfort was so bad with my girlfriend I begged her to get it removed, which she did. It amounted to a stabbing sensation at the tip of my penis. OUCH!
