How do you remove propane odor from a home?

We are seriously thinking about buying a home, but when we viewed it it reaked of propane smell. They claimed it was because it had been unoccupied for a while. Of course we would have the whole propane heating system inspected, so I'm not yet worried about that. My question is, will the smell ever go away, and how long does it take? And how do you remove it? Do you just air the home out, or are there other ways? I don't think I could live with that smell, just being their for 20 minutes almost made me ill.

You should know that a very small amount of propane smells a lot.

You should be able to just air out the house and all will be well but as you said the entire system should be check by a professional.

NOTE: Propane is heavier than air. If you have a propane odor do not use any electrical appliances including lights until the source of the odor is determined.

To help you find the leak check at the pilot lights for the furnace and stove first.

Seems a lot of conflicting answers on here. I bought a camp heater @ a yard sale - and stored it with the propane cylinders in my bedroom closet. I started smelling a sickening odor (one point we all agree on). I moved those cylinders outside and have left the closet door open all day and window open wide all day and come home and no change. I'm guessing that some got into the carpet. I will be tearing this carpet out next month and hope and pray to get rid of that stinking, horrible odor once and for all!!! Yes, it causes me to fill ill and headache. And I sleep in here. Thankfully it's warm enough now where I can open the window at night. I feel for the person who asked this Q because I'm thinking she may have had the gas get into her carpet or curtains (who knows?) and I can tell from experience that it doesn't go away as easy as most posters say it does. Not from inside a residential home.

I hate that smell....you'll always have it. And you can't keep a window cracked year around...your heat will go out in the winter and your cool air will go out in the summer. There's a leak somewhere or maybe the pilot light on something is out. The odor is added to the propane so people can detect a problem before it turns into a disaster.

Source(s): Had propane gas in our home for 20 years...the only time it smelled bad was when the propane tank was low.

open the windows, come back in two hours, if you still smell gas, YOU HAVE A LEAK!!!!! propane dose not leave a "scent stain" and is removed very quickly as soon as the source (leak) is removed or turned off, and the space aired out

Anyone who would make such an unethical claim shouldn't be selling a doll house, much less real estate. Propane has no lingering odor - once it's gone, it's gone.

tooth paste, wash your arms with tooth previous, bleach works, gas dissolves something, this is purely too risky to apply interior, wipe down arms exterior with a rag and gas, use "flow JO" hand cleanser, then tooth paste, dry arms in rag with out utilising water, rinse in approximately 20 minutes, this way the "tooth PASTE" will take up into the exterior, the place the "Skunk Oil" which you spilled on your self is.
