It reminds me of socialized protection, which is bankrupting the US.
Even if you balance the budget, 1-2 trillion in interest alone will need to be paid.

Oh we already ran out of money to do that. Communist China is now bankrolling everything from the economy to Bush's insane war. Better get ready for the "red menace" to come collecting it debts.

How can we afford not to be. Who else will do it? Would we here in America be safe if we didn't stand up to terrorism and Communism?
I'd say we have to do this indefinitely. I wish we didn't have to though.
