Contracting Herpes When There is No Sign of an Outbreak?

I did something stupid. Please no bashing because we're all adults here.

I had unprotected sex with someone who has had herpes for 17 years. He only breaks out once a year, and even then its only one little blister. His last outbreak was in December.

He said that he has never given it to anyone before. He has a 3 month old daughter. Neither his ex (the baby's mum) nor his daughter has it (I don't know what the daughter has to do with it. Can babies get it through the womb???)

Anyway, I called a nurse that works for my Drs office. She said that I more than likely do not have it since he wasn't broken out at the time. My therapist said the same thing.

Any advice?

    They are correct.

If he has hsv-2, if you had sex with him several times a week for an entire year when he wasn't having outbreaks your risk of catching it from him would only be 10% - over a year. So from one encounter the risk would be very low.

That isn't to say it isn't there. People can have sex with a partner with herpes for decades without catching it, others catch it the first time. Like rolling a couple of sixes when you are rolling dice, it might take you a long time or you might hit the jackpot first time.

My boyfriend gets cold sores. I didn't so I was at risk of catching genital herpes when he gave me oral sex - so he scrupulously avoided outbreaks. In the end, I caught genital herpes when he gave me oral sex, but it was 7 years down the line. For my sister it happened four months into her relationship. My friend caught it from a one night stand when she was 18. All chance. If you don't have symptoms in a week you should be fine.

No, babies can't catch it in the womb. It is passed by skin contact, so there is a tiny - and I mean tiny - risk of catching neonatal herpes as the baby passes through the birth canal during a vaginal birth. However, this normally only happens when the mother has recently contracted herpes - otherwise her antibodies provide proteciton for the baby. My sister has had three healthy babies by vaginal delivery.

BTW, a previous poster was incorrect. Unless you develop sores in the next few days which could be swabbed, there is absolutely no point in getting a herpes blood test straight away, it would be a complete waste of money because the test looks for antibodies which take 3-6 months to show up in your blood after you are exposed to the virus. So there is no point. If you are concerned enough to get tested, get tested in six months time. It is always worth getting tested anyway - one in four women have genital herpes and most are unaware of it.

My best friend has had genital herpes for about eight months now, and it's been really rough. She's had about 7 outbreaks. Everywhere I read it says it stops flaring up so much after time, but its not getting less frequent for her. She's been on Antiviral meds the whole time, too. She also has type 1 diabetes which she has had her whole life, which really weakens her immune system. Will it ever get better?

But after a friend share this video everything has changed.

Honest to goodness truth, these is some risk associated with having unprotected sex even NOT during a herpes flare up, but it's unlikely. I'd schedule to see a HCP in a couple of days if you notice groups of small, painful blisters. The fluid in the blisters may be clear or cloudy (which typically happens after 2-8 days after contact). But honestly, it's a very low risk.

And yes, there is possibility of passing on herpes to a baby during childbirth and during an outbreak.

I would get tested no matter what. I contracted it from someone who had no symptoms at all. Just to be on the safe side, I would get tested.

As for the child, yes they contract it through the womb and or being born with the skin to skin contact. But because the mother doesn't have it then the chances the child got it are very slim.

Now, if he had an outbreak in Dec, the virus could still be active. The virus can be spread even without outbreaks.

    Get tested to be safe.
