I carried water and ice in travel cups and filled up at water fountains where I could. I was on the road in sales and refused to drink sugary or even no sugar drinks that don't quench thirst and make you sleepy. Often I carried a small cooler with extra ice except in the summer.

Oh, I remember it just like it was yesterday... Me and ma would go down to the crick-- Okay, seriously, we had water fountains, sometimes they were even plugged in so that the water was cold! And it was free, too! Of course, you couldn't take it with you. Also, most restaurants and fast food places would give you water for free. I remember being somewhere in the south during the 70's, I was under the age of 5, so the memory's a little fuzzy. We were trying to find water somewhere, but the stores didn't sell it yet and we couldn't find any place that would give us any water. My great grandma was with us (which is how I know I was under 5), and she wouldn't let us buy any soda; she said she'd rather have a big spoonful of pee. I don't remember what we did end up doing, but I'm glad you can buy water anywhere now.

Several other procedures included drinking from water fountains, filling a glass at the sink, buying a coke, etc.
What is wrong with any of these now? Too convenient? Too practical? Not trendy enough?

I still drank water or a soda.
I either carried a sport bottle to refill at water fountains or just bought a drink somewhere.
Have you noticed that water fountains seem to be in short supply these days?

I've always known them to be sold in plastic bottles, but at school they had water fountains (that people blocked with chewing gum...nice)

I guess the water fountains, but I typically had a bottle of soda or a glass of tea then.

I did not exist when there were no water bottles. At least, I don't think I did. Sorry.
By the way, this does not fit under etiquette.

I drank it from the creek in the back yard, like an animal. WOW, plastic bottles have sure made it easier for me to drink WATER, not to mention domesticated me! LOL. Thanks bottled water companies for putting it into a plastic bottles that now clogs the same creek I used to drink from.

Water fountains, which honestly gross me out now that I’m old enough to understand germs.
