how can you get something taken off of your credit report that has been there longer than 7 years?
I have recently been turned down for a mortgage b/c of a credit card that has resurfaced and it has been charged off for over 7 years. I need to get it removed ASAP so that I can start my home search. Does anyone know of a place that will give a mortgage to a person with less than perfect credit. scores in the high 500's and low 600's?

There is a federal law called the "Fair Credit Reporting Act" which governs how long negative items can stay on your credit report. Charge-offs can stay for seven years and the clock starts ticking on the day the you first became deliquent and never became current again.....This clock CANNOT be restarted under any circumstances....It does not matter if it passes through several collection agencies...there is only one seven year cycle.
The Fair Credit Reporting Act was passed so that consumers would not be punished forever for making a financial mistake. Seven years is long enough. If this old charge-off has "resurfaced" after seven years, then this is a violation of the Fair Credit Reporting Act. Many sleazy collection agencies will engage in re-aging of charge-offs to make it easier for them to collection. This is illegal.
Pull all 3 credit reports and look at the "Date of Last" activity for this notion. If it is recent, that means that a collection agency has tampered with it (a common act). If this is the case, dispute this with the credit bureaus (not the collection agency).
Send a letter to all three credit bureaus, Registered Mail with Return Receipt, stating that this charge-off notation has passed the maximum allowable time allowed by the Fair Credit Reporting Act to be reported and that you are requesting that it be deleted.

Ughhh you're getting some bad advice! Do NOT pay this thing with a loan! Do NOT pay it at all! Get copies of all 3 credit reports. Correct all personal info and remove old addresses. Dispute that account as being re-aged if it has been. Ask them to verify the account. IF it comes back verified and they won't delete then you'll have to send the creditor a validation request. You only need to use CMRRR (certified mail return receipt required) when you send stuff to the actual creditor. CMRRR costs over $4 so it can get expensive. You'll then have to resend the credit reporting agency another letter demanding they delete it because it's over 7 years old and you want proof they verified it.

Derogatory items fall off your credit report 7-1/2 years from the date of first deficiency. This is per the FCRA and nothing restarts this clock. If the item is more than 7 years old, dispute it with the credit bureau as being beyond the reporting period.

I dont know any mortgage companies.. but in order to get that off of your record you can write a letter to the company saying that it has been more than 7 years that this has been charged off and you would like it removed, and also write a letter to the credit bureau..

You can usually have items removed by :
1) Contacting the credit reporting agency and asking them to remove it because it is disputed. When it is disputed, the company who lodged the credit report against you has to prove to the agency that a debt existed.. They usually don't keep records more than seven years and cannot prove the debt.
2) you can pay out any existing amount owing on the debt by consolidating the debt in a debt consolidation loan. The loan might include your new mortgage. Have a look around http://www.debt-support-center.com/ for companies that can help you.
Good luck.

call the credit bureaus & file a consumer dispute verification form. also called a cdv. this means they will file the dispute with the agnecy that is reporting the debt & the agency has 30 days from reciept of that dispute to remove that item or they are in violation. every state is different so you need to read your state laws

If there is a Judgment against you, it could stay on file for 10 years depending what State you live in. If there is no Judgment, then the most it can stay on is 7 years.

It seems that if they keep selling them to collectors the account has not been stopped, I had some collector call about an account over 10 years ago, and they said it isn't closed to the Bureau or anywhere until they stop turning them to collections agencies.I have also heard that those as the 1st one mentioned still affect your credit and says they were unpaid or loaned, not sure.======

Slimick is ABSOLUTELY CORRECT.
Dispute this item - the credit bureau(s) must delete it if the date of debt aquisition is over 7 years old.
