How can we stop the proliferation of desiger dog breeding?

I see questions daily on breeding/cross breeding dogs.

Don't people realize that this is adding to the overpopulation pet problem in the US?

Poodles and pit bulls/Rotts? Why would you even think of this?

Anything that walks crossed with a poodle constitutes a "designer dog"?

These are mutts pure and simple. How many end up in the pound?

Please don't foster this behavior. Adopt don't breed.

Update:

I recently received censure from YA for questioning the intelligence of the poodle/pitbull/Rott crosses. The writer professed that the "temperment" of the dog was improved and that was his goal.

Maybe a better course of action would be to educate yourself on proper training methods. Don't let owner's shortfalls result in dogs being put down in shelters.

If you want a mix breed--I adopt them, not breed them or give $$$ to someone doing a disservice to dogs everywhere.

Right on,,,,educate people, don't attack them. Alot of people consider it education when they attack and call people rude names. I've turned many people around here in my town (friends family clients) by just answering their questions about the 'designer' dog. I answer in a way that lets them go home and think about it. Once you get someone really thinking about the fact that they are being taken for a fool by the sellers of these 'breeds' they get irritated that they were almost suckered, and become another person to continue the educating when their friends and families ask or mention it. People listen better when you give them info in non threatening way, then let them hash through that info on their own.

Example,,,,someone brings a poodle in to be groomed, and want to know how I would groom a shi-poo (or some such) since they are thinking of buying one. I tell them the truth, without rancor. I tell them that there is really no particular way that you groom them, because there is no way to know what they will look like as they grow. That since they are a mix, the hair could be poodley or shi-tzuy, or somewhere in between. That you just have to see what you get as you go along. Next question from them is "what about the picture I saw of a shi-poo? can't you do it that way.......I tell them that that is just one of many ways they can look, and there is a very small chance that theirs will happen to have that look or hair after it's grown. Next statement is.....'they told me it was a pure bred dog? how can it look different ways' I remind them that they used two pure bred dogs to make it,,,but like kids, you don't know what you'll really get. Blues eyes? curly hair? straight hair? and so on......About now is when they're thinking ...1000.00 and I don't know what it'll look like?!! So fare,,,none of these questioners have come back with a mix. I see them next time with a pure bred,,,a rescue,,,or they just decide to stick with the one dog.

You can educate people if you do it the gentle way.

First people need to understand that the price they pay is way too much for a mutt. They need to do a lot of research to know about dogs and understand dogs, which I doubt that they will do it. It's very sickening to see these backyard breeders breed two different breeds and sell them for high prices. I agree with your point. People need to know the "special dogs" they purchase are just overpriced mutts. They are encouraging the bybs to produce more mutts to the world.

It is hard overcome the feeling that you're fighting a losing battle. But I believe if you keep educating as many people as you can, it makes a difference. I am also a firm believer in the idea that history repeats itself. Not that long ago, everybody wanted a purebred bc no one had one, then everyone wanted a designer mutt bc no one had one. It will reverse itself. I might sound a little lax on the subject but, I just don't want to worry about it so much that it consumes me. I'll definitely call them as I see them though! LOL

The only way to stop people from breeding these expensive mutts is for others to stop buying them. As long as the demand is there it will be impossible to stop people from breeding them. No amount of legislation or degrading web pages or anything else will stop these dogs from being bred, only when there is absolutely no way for the breeders to make money off of them will they stop.

It's a matter of educating those that think that these dogs are a new "Breed". Same thing goes for educating people on Puppy Mills.

It's simple economics - Supply and Demand. If there is no demand, there will be no need for them to keep supplying mutts, or for Puppy Mills to keep breeding dogs.

I have never seen a pitbull-rott/poodle! I sure hope the Dam was not the poodle! I have a poodle/chihuahua, and he is certainly NOT a designer dog. What a gomer he is, but I love him as much as I love my Pom, and I'm very glad that his mom was not spayed!

Educate people, send the message out that designer dogs are overpriced and not properly bred. They`re overpaying for a mutt.

The only thing we can do is attempt to educate the individuals that feed into this fad, and urge them not to buy these dogs. If the demand is cut, so is the supply, and the BYBs and puppymills that produce, market and overcharge for these dogs are out of business.
