Canada puts US on torture list?

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/americas/7195276....

The United States has been listed as a country where prisoners are at risk of torture in a training document produced by the Canadian foreign ministry.

It also classifies some US interrogation techniques as torture.

The manual - part of a training course on torture awareness for diplomats - also includes Israel, China, Iran and Afghanistan on its watch list.

The Canadians have it spot on again.

your view on this

Certainly there are a large number of countries that have appalling records as regards torture as stated by others but the difference with the U.S. is they pretend they are innocent of it,cast stones at others and ship out their victims for others to torture believing this absolves them from guilt.Torturing while trying to play the good guy? That's shameful.

    The Canadians are right.

Robin- do you mean "Is torture justified", or "Is putting the US and Israel on the list justified"? I would say that putting the US on the list is justified as I've heard and read from various sources that torture methods are used. In acting as a rep of the US or Israeli government I'm sure no minister would admit to this as it's not good politics to be seen to support this. But I'm sure there are many that truly believe torture is the best way to deal with certain scenarios. I think many defence reps from the US/ Israel would privately admit they're not against torture, though they might not call it that. It's used as a means to an end and many think that it's an action worth taking if it appears to save lives. It's clearly one rule for some and one for others. We may have democracies but the government propaganda and spin are still fully alive and kicking. I'm convinced that democratic nations use un-democratic means and the power of the media to acheive their aspirations overseas.

Also Israel, Canada had better take the USA and Israel of the torture list otherwise either Mossad or the CIA will kidnap and torture the whole of the Canadian foreign ministry

    hi kamran

i read this too, and i believe the Canadians are completely justified. The pictures that were circulated of the Iraqi prisoners a while ago showed torture, and I have no doubt in my mind that some techniques used to extract information from prisoners will be equally torturous. No doubt there are numerous other countries who are equally guilty of this.

    EDIT

Elsie I have always liked your posts and have always believed you are a nice person, I think you are being really disrespectful by spelling Kamrans name the way you do. You dont have to like him but theres no need to be so rude.

Here,s one i find strange.Ok back to stoning to death for the guys who can,t keep there zippers up,and likewise for the women who get overpowered by the assailants, raped and blamed. The point is if you can escape from the stoning your deemed free, theguys are buried up to there waists whilst because the chest is deemed sexual on a woman they are buried up to and above the chest.Thats fair now isnt it ladies, apparently it only takes about twenty minutes to die thats after your eyes have fell out, then the stones can get really lambasted into the sockets.Whatever are we doing to stand back and allow this because two cows weren,t dowried.Must be plenty of cut and paste for this one,wil start looking tomorrow

I gather the political effect of 9/11 is wearing off and the U.S. in once again being viewed with a critical eye.

Why single out the USA,what about Saudi Arabia, what about Iraq when Saddam was in power,Russia, china, Chile, the list of countries that use torture is a long one. So if your going to condemn torture surely you should name all those that use it or is that you just don't like the USA ?

I agree with you that torture is barbaric but you cannot single out one country.

Good to see Canada finally flexing its muscles. Being the poor relation to the USA has meant the Canadians were always a bit of a nonentity on the international stage, so well done Canada.

Frankly,I pleasantly surprized, given Canadian enthusiam for this so-called War on Terroroism ,i.e. underground resitance to the occupation of Palestine. I was surprized canada supported the invasion of iraq. I gather they were inflamed at the time by 9/11/. It's nice to know they've come back to earth.
