What should I use to clean a filthy dorm microwave?

The microwave on the first floor of my dorm building is absolutely disgusting. Whenever you open it, there's this foul smell, presumably of burnt, old food, and there's crusted-on, carbonized crap covering the bottom, as well as set in stains on the sides and top. One time I even discovered this terrible-smelling gray slime coating the bottom. The kitchen is our responsibility, so I want to take up the task of cleaning this thing. The problem is, I haven't a clue what to use. I know I'm gonna need some heavy-duty stuff, but nothing that'll be harmful to the microwave or to the residents (in other words, no toxic fumes). Has anyone here had experience with this? What can I use that will safely and effectively clean this thing?

Thanks in advance!

Update:

It sounds like the general consensus so far is to boil some water in the microwave before doing any cleaning. I think it's a good idea, and I'll probably do it, but I think I might do a quick wipedown first, just to see what I can get out without the help of the steam. Then I'll boil the water and go from there.

There are a number of microwave cleaners on the market but before I spend the money I would put a container of water in there for at least 2-3 minutes and cook on high. This will allow steam to build up and loosen any hard dried on food. Then wipe with a cloth with plain dish soap and water . If necessary repeat the process.

You could also use baking soda on a rag with just a little water.

This also works well in cleaning out the fridge.

Start by putting some water in the microwave in a microwave safe container and boil the water inside (2 minutes or so should do it). This will soften the no doubt crusties you have in there. Then just take some good ole 409 and clean it out. Afterwards run the microwave for 3 minutes or so to get rid of the smell. It won't be as big of a project as you think if you use the water trick!

Use a heavy duty cleaner and turn the microwave on for 20-30 seconds. It loosens the grime and makes things slide off. If it's layered on you may need to wipe, spray and repeat.

Leftover fumes shouldn't really be an issue but you can always leave baking powder in the box in the microwave or leave the door open to air out.

fill a micro safe bowl with 2 cups of water microwave for

5 minutes until it boils let set 5 more minutes

[don't open the microwave you need the steam to make the micro moist inside] take the bowl out and wipe with paper towels repeat if necessary until clean

You could def use baking soda. Baking soda is a great way to clean, its cheap, it helps alot with odor!

Considering th Job you have in your hands.. buy a box of bakin soda. Then in a bowl mix equal amounts water and baking soda! Just spread it in the micro wave... let in sit for a few minutes, then wipe down with a warm wash cloths!!! Repeat if needed!

Another thing you may do. is use a spray bottle and use a little bit of DILUTES Clorox lemon bleach. The spray it on a wash cloths.. then wipe the micro wave! It will work great! Just be sure to wipe it down after your done well! This is what I do when mine gets pretty dirty!

    Hope this helps!!

Believe it or not baking soda and water does a wonderful job of cleaning the microwave. It sounds like the dorm microwave has NEVER been cleaned. You have a tough job on your hands.

put white vinegar in a cup and microwave it a few minutes - if it doesn't wipe right off - microwave longer and wipe out each time.
