What do you do with your puppies tails?

Seriously. We docked tails/ removed dewclaws last night, and I just started wondering what everyone else does with the tails? Do you save them and turn them in to the breed club for research? or just trash them?

That's an interesting question & I have no answer for you but I just had to comment. I had never stopped to think about what is done w/ the tails. I've never had and of my dogs docked. If there is a research company that could use them then I would make sure they get it. Sure beats trashing it.

People, docking tails is not illegal in the USA, is done before a puppy's nervous system is fully developed, and is actually a benefit to the dog in some breeds -- you know, when they do their job.

I know, thumbs down, thumbs down. I suck.

To answer the question -- the vet I worked for just threw them away. They shrivel up to nothing. Someone in this forum once mentioned composting them -- if you compost, that might be a good idea.

My parents used to breed cocker spaniels, we did our own tail-dockings (well, my parents did the actual dockings, I watched a couple of times). We just threw them in the trash.

you should not have had the dogds tail docked unless there was a medical reasom.. there tail is part of there spin it can shorten there lives!! dogds have tails for a reason dont dock them its crule..

dogs tailes were docked in the olden days for reasons as they were working dogs and if they were not docked they could get stuck in things and it would really hurt the dog ... but over time it just seemed like the look of the dog so they kept docking them for show... but research as proven that it can harm the dog when there older and troughout there life

people might say ohh its his breed!!!it doesnt matter what the breed is its crule DONT DO IT

    wow...docking tails?

i mean, what's the point, unless it's required if you're showing them or it's for a medical purpose (as in the dog is sick).

just let the dogs have their natural tails, as nature intended it to be.

but probably throw them away...actually now that i think about it the mental image of a trashcan full of tail parts are a bit creepy to me.

they are made into HOT DOGS!!!!!!

a couple of years ago, a friend asked what hot dogs were made out of, and me, being the joker that i am, told her that when they dock dogs tails, they make them into hot dogs, and that the little cocktail wieners came from toy breeds......

she actually believed me, and that was the funny part.
