What is more important at the scene of a crime, treating a victim or arresting a fleeing armed suspect?

A very controversial issue in dealing with emergency conditions at a crime scene can occur when there are injured victims needing medical aid and there is an armed suspect attempting to flee. Should you render aid and permit the suspect to escape and possibly harm others, or do you apprehend the suspect and risk the life of the victim? Which do you consider the most important and why? Provide legal as well as moral arguments.

EMTs should treat the victims, law enforcement should go after the criminal, so as to keep him from harming others. Since most law enforcement personnel aren't EMTs, in your example, they would probably save more people by stopping the criminal. The other problem with having an armed criminal in the area is they can hamper the EMTs from being able to do their jobs. Also, if someone is shot in the chest, they need to get to a hospital ASAP, first aid isn't going to do much for them.

You always render aid to the injured victims, the suspect you can deal with later, they'll get caught eventually

I think the victims should always come first. At least radio for an ambulance then go after the suspect.

If one has a brain one would treat the victim first. Letting someone possibly die from injuries just to capture the suspect

is absurd. The suspect will most often get off with probation

or a few years at most especially if the court is liberal.

obviously my answer is not too reliable since i get it from watching 24, but i agree with this process.

when the policemen reache the crime scene and see the injury, if its too serious, one of them stays while the others follow the criminal, if there is only one he stays. if its not too serious, they call in for medical support and follow the criminal.

I think that you have to help the injured party to survive, first, no matter what.

Shoot and kill the suspect, then help the victims. No arrest necessary.

    No charge. Next question please.
