Is there anybody who has had a gastric bypass and can share their experience - Good or/and bad please?

I am thinking of having one, being vastly overweight and a diabetic, but must admit I am a bit frightened. What's your opinion? Should I go ahead and get it done?

Thanksx

Don't look so sad, you are on the right track.

Go with what you are comfortable with. I researched for 3 years before I had mine done. It's been 4 years now!!!!! I would do it every year if I needed to. The most important thing is to be ready in your mind, it's not a magic pill, it is a wonderful tool, and you will be more aware of what you eat the rest of your life. It is a major commitment, not to be taken lightly. Do LOTS of research on your doctor, go to meetings in your area and listen to others in YOUR area. Support groups are the place to go BEFORE you have it done to get the REAL story.

NOW with all that being said, Good luck on what ever you decide.

I've lost 212 pounds and can see my feet for the first time since I was 11. I'm a "normal" size 8. My BMI was 54....look it up, I was headed to an early grave. I wore a size 30W. My body did morph into something weird, but that is why we have talented plastic surgeons.

GO MAKE YOUR LIFE, "YOUR" LIFE!!!!

Hey there! First let me say i was so frightened for my mother to have the surgery, pluse her being very serverly over weight (355) and to add on to it she was typ I diabetic. So her taking shots and carying all that weight was hard on her and taking her life from my brother and i. I was right beside her when she had her surgery in San Diego at Scripps Mercy Hosp. She had an awesome team who worked with her and a wonderful support team of family, I watched my mother go throgh sum pain of not being able to eat the foods she wants to eat but i've aslo watched her go from 355- 220 and no shots nor pills!!! She is a true trooper. I say if this surgery helps you in keeping life then go for id if you have no other option. My mother went from wearing a size 32-22 and walking the beat walks she has done in years. Now don't get it wrong that it's an easy out, It's not! There is work to do, eating right, exercise, watching how much you eat. Also, my partner had the surgery she not a diabetic but other health issues and i can say it helped sve her life in finding an very serious heart issue. So i say, pray about it then talk it over with your doctor. Give life, Show life, enjony life.

    much love, Ty

I had the surgery almost eight months ago and I've never regretted it! I've lost almost one hundred pounds and I'm feeling GREAT! I had no complications except my face had swollen due to an allergic reaction to pain meds, but other than that, I'd do it all over again without a second thought.

I'm a nurse who works with them alot. For the most part they do really well. I would try the lap band though, it is less risky than the bypass. A girl a work had it done, and is doing great. Its less invasive.

Gastric banding is considered a far safer alternative, it has the advantage of being adjustable so the doctor can adjust the size of the food sack to suit you.
