Get him a board game. Just go to Target (or wherever) and go to the toy section and pick out a board game that you think he would enjoy.

Something like Disney Scene It or Caboodle (I think that's what it's called).

Don't get him anything remote control or anything with small pieces. Remote control things only work for about 7 minutes and things with small pieces end up lost and in the bottom of the toy box before the day is over. Either that or they get sucked up in the vacuum.

Frankly, I think at that age a gift card is okay. But, at 6 years, some boys are still into opening the gift. If that's the case, give him some legos. They love that!

Anything Spiderman, I have found that little boys like...along with legos, a scooter, or a bike. It's not as hard as you think to come up with things for a 6 year old boy.

I read all your answers, and Spider-man and Lego's are good, But any action figures are Great! Boys love them! Anything from T.M.N.T's(that is Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles) to Star Wars(the best)!!

Lego, Lego and more Legos......this has been such an oldie but goodie and they last forever (don't let the dog eat them...it makes for interesting landmines). They can get models to make and add more as they go.
