Getting a 5 month old to drink Pedialyte?

Hi - I have a 5 month old boy, and he's got a bug that's going around, with diarrhea and loss of appetite. We have taken him to his doctor twice, and we're doing everything she says. My question is - is there any easier way to get a baby to drink Pedialyte? He HATES it and spits it out when given by bottle or syringe, but he needs it to stay hydrated. If anyone has clever method, it would really help us out. Thanks in advance.

Try mixing it with formula, or breast milk. Nothing else!!! At 5 months old he is not ready for sugary drinks, and anything else like gatorade IS NOT MADE FOR BABIES. THE OTHERS ON HERE WHO SUGGEST IT ARE WRONG. DO NOT ADD JUICE OR SUGAR TO IT EITHER. GIVING A BABY ANYTHING BUT WATER FORMULA OR BREASTMILK BEFORE 6 MONTHS HAS BEEN FOUND IN 86% OF CASES TO CAUSE ADULT DIABETES!!!!!! Good luck, and I hope your little guy feels better!!

    Unflavored Pedialyte

Yeah, that stuff is NASTY. You can mix it with other drinks, and they make an "unflavored" kind. It is disgusting too, but it mixes a little better than the flavored kind. Also you can try the pedia-pops. Most kids like those. They have both suckers and popcicles. It would be a little messy, but hey, he'd be getting it and having fun in the high chair. Just make sure if you use the suckers or popcicles that you watch him really well and trade out suckers before they get small.

Try mixing it 50% pedialyte 25% water 25% apple or grape juice. If that doesn't work ask your pediatrician if they're okay with diluted gatorade. I know my toddler hates pedialyte but will chug gatorade...it tastes better!

Also how dehydrated is he currently if his soft spot has sunken in or his skin doesn't go back if you pull it up a bit then he may need to go in for IV fluids. If he isn't dehydrated too much then maybe let it slide for a bit and then try again.

Also try to have an adult other then mom and dad that he knows try to give it to him. Even this young children will do things for other adults that they would never do for their parents!

My pediatrician told me to use a little eye dropper from a baby Tylenol bottle (wash it first). When I couldn't get enough down him that way without prying his mouth open, I called back and was told that I could offer 50% water, 50% Gatorade instead. Not that he liked that much better, but it's worth trying. You might also buy a few different flavors and see if he likes any of them.

I was really panicked about dehydration because I didn't get wet diapers for awhile, but the baby turned out to be fine, so don't worry too much. You are paying your parenting dues. Good luck.

If you can buy the clear, unflavored Pedialyte. Try mixing it with juice or formula, breast-milk or a diluted mix of jello water to make it sweet for him. Try your best to keep him hydrated. If none of this works, go back to the doctor and tell them he's not taking it.

Be careful babies are real smart.

As you give it too him in the syringe blow in his nose to make him swallow But PLEASE be real carful because you are cutting off his wind because babies don't know how to breathe out of their mouths yet if he starts he will be gasping for air but he can't do anything but swallow it. Then again did the doc. say give it too him in a syringe? that don't seem like it's enough.... add a little Karo syrup to taste better and he might take it. 5 mos. no acid like the other (sprite lady said) good luck

I have three that don't like the stuff either, I tried making popsicles with them, that way they stay cool( if it's summer) or you could try putting it in a juice cup with water so that the taste isn't so strong, or buy the one that is closer to apple juice and mix it with apple juice, so they don't know the difference.

Get a flavored version and give it to him chilled. My son loved it when he was sick. Even if he just drinks a little ever couple hours he'll be okay.

Sugar it up. It's short term, and hydration is more important than his dental health right now. Just sweeten it a bit; not enough to shock his stomach.

That stuff sucks. I tried drinking it as part of the coax-my-kid strategy, and frankly couldn't blame him.

I feel your pain. Been there.
