Agree or Disagree: Bill Clinton Needs to "Step Back"?

Bill Clinton has stepped into the fray recently, criticizing Sen. Barack Obama, even though he is only a candidate's spouse, not the person running.

Do you think Bill Clinton overstepped the line of a spouse (which traditionally are cheerleaders for their candidate, on the rare occasions they speak publicly), or should special allowances be made for Clinton, considering he's a former President? Or, perhaps, should all spouses attack their candidate's political rivals?

This question's open to everybody; I appreciate all points of view.

Update:

I am not asking if it's acceptable for Bill to be campaigning for Hillary; he should be.

What I'm asking is, should HE be the one making ALL the hard-hitting accusations, instead of Hillary. It appears he doing most of the political "dirty work", so to speak. Should or should that not be coming from the candidate him/herself, not the spouse?

Clintons are one of the most famous families and they have had to live their entire lives including the bad parts in front of public scrutiny like a soap opera.

What we are witnessing is history being made. It is not every day that a former popular president's wife happens to be qualified and driven enough to leave a cushy former first lady and successful senator job to try and make this a better country.

I think he should do everything he can to get his opinion across and he has been quite ethical in doing so.

We must remember that if Oprah who is a showbus person makes so many stops for Obama and all the rich people who donate to him is OK but this is not?

I believe this is invigorating people to vote. Bill Clinton is a magnetic person and even after his operations he is getting out there. They are choosing a harder life and I think it's admirable.

I think that a lot of candidate's spouses campaign for their candidates, if maybe not criticize the other candidates. The problem is that Bill Clinton gets a lot more media attention than any other spouses, because he was a former President. I just wish that he and Hillary wouldn't be attacking Obama and twisting his record in a way that is reminiscent of the Republicans swift boating John Kerry.

He has as much right to assist his wife in her attempt to be president as any wife of any candidate.. Do you hear anyone saying Obamas wife should step back. Think about the comments she made about Clinton and her marraige. Basicly said if she cant run her marraige why does she think she can run the country. It is not uncommon for a spouse to do the attacking of an opponent. It is only an issue because this time it is a man and partially because he is a former president.

Not at all. America is in desperately need to save its world leadership. There's nothing wrong when two people with years of political experience and knowlege come together as a team to offer their opinions to the voters. Voters desperately do need all the info they can gather out of every good analytical mind before voting day arrives.

Voters should never be contented with info that falls short in their ears. A drastic mistake was made in 2000 and 2004, and voters should not make the same mistake of just hearing from well-paid hooters, but directly from the candidate and their family members. Let's take for instant, Romney's sons, Josh and Craig. They came off as unimpressive, lame ducks when speaking in front of the TV cameras. They sound like parrots, echoing nothing new from what their father's paid hooters have been screeching. I've been impressed with Edwards' wife, too.

By the way, there's no law against an Ex-president campaigning for his wife. In fact Hillary is lucky to have a husband who has the experience of knowing what a President's life is all about. We are getting a voice from experience... not some highly paid advertizing agent or media clown.

Former Presidents often campaign for other candidates running for office. If Bush didn't have a low 30% popularity rating he would be out campaigning on behalf of some repub candidate.

Bill should continue to campaign for his wife just as Michele Obama does for Barack.

No. I would campaign for my wife if she were running for office. He has been a plus for her and he is not afraid to point out the problems with Obama that the candidates have been afraid to point out in the debates until the last one. I am a Hillary supporter and if he helps her win the nomination then I think it is great.

Fortunately for Obama, Bill Clinton is there...Obama never talks about his program during a debate, he talks more about Bill Clinton than real issues, it's very practice when you don't feel very sure about a topic, change it....Today, he talks about a conspiracy against himself (He says that some people accused him to be a muslim and that is a political strategy...). For me it's just an another way of not talking about his program.....If Bill Clinton would have not been President, what could say Obama and his group against Hillary Clinton, not a lot of things...

I am no fan of the Clinton's but he is without a doubt her biggest asset. Despite his controversial Presidency he remains very popular in some circles.

The people telling Bill to step back are usually Obama supporters. It is ALWAYS a bad idea to take campaign advice from your enemies.

Trust me on that; I am a Republican, they are constantly taking advice from opponents and always surprised when their advice does not work. But I am sure they will be right some day.

Bill should stay and be Bill, there would be no Hillary campaign without him.

"Bill Clinton Needs to "Step Back"?" Absolutely NOT.

His wife is running for president, and he's in there to help her.

Would the Black community ask Clinton to "step back" if Obama was a white guy? No. Blatant double standard here.

Affirmative action won't help Barack Obama get elected. This is something he has to do on his own. And if the heat is too much for him, then he should bow out.

No, Bill is doing what Michelle Obama or Liz Edwards have been doing, but he is doing a better job at it.

The fact that he is an ex prez should not restrict his view and support.
