  • Hard drive beeps, won't boot?

My Toshiba Satellite C655 with a Seagate 500gb hard drive froze up the other night (which is strange), so I turned it off. The next morning, the hard drive starts beeping during the boot up screen, and it doesn't go anywhere. No Windows. I got this warning after about a minute of the beeping sound:

"PXE-E61: Media test failure, check cable PXE-MOF: exiting PXE ROM no bootable device - insert boot disk."

I then put in the recovery disk and restarted, which got me this error:

    "ERROR: F3-F100-0003"

I checked BIOS, and it doesn't see my hard drive, which I made sure was securely plugged in. Is my one-year, one-month old hard drive toast?

  • How do I present an idea for a policy change to my community college?

My community college structures their finals for all the students so there is no overlap. However, sometimes the instructors schedule their finals at times other than those structured by the college.

As an example, one of my instructors scheduled our final for Monday @ 3:00pm, instead of Tuesday @ 4:00pm. Another structured block for finals was from 2-4 on Monday, so it is possible that (if I had a slightly different schedule), I would have missed the first hour of the final in question, due to fact that the instructor didn't follow the school's set schedule.

I think this is wrong, and that all classes should abide by the college's set schedule (there's really no reason not to). How do I go about getting this changed at the administrative level?

  • Fantasy, Week 6: Brady or McNabb?

Some sorry guy had to dump McNabb when he got hurt, and I scooped him up off waivers.

Forgetting for a moment the "golden child" tag that's been slapped on Brady*, and simply judging by their on-field weapons, and the whole overall picture, whom do I start Week 6?

    Patriots vs. Titans

    Eagles @ Raiders

*Nothing personally against Brady, it's just that some people have this "It's Tom Brady, he cannot fail" idea in their heads.

Any and all honest assessments welcome. Thank you.

  • Reverting Back to XP Home Without CD or Recovery Partition?

I need to revert my old Toshiba's Satellite laptop with Windows XP Pro back to the Windows XP Home edition it came with. The Pro edition does not pass validation (I was given this computer by my grandmother; I suspect the person who had it before her, another relative, did not know of Windows rules of multiple installations.)

I know that this system originally came with XP home, because there is a sticker on the bottom of the laptop with a Home edition Serial number on it -- unfortunately for me, I have neither the recovery CD, nor does there appear to be a recovery partition (no i386 file is present on the system.) I'm not sure if this was an upgrade or clean install of Pro edition.

Essentially, I have a non-genuine copy of Pro installed, and the original Home product key -- can anybody help me?

  • Can Someone Explain to me This Whole "Jena Six" Thing?

Perhaps I do not have the whole story. I know the high school has nooses hanging in the trees. Then a group of black students assaulted a white student.

One went to jail, and the other five just got seven days probation Now, I understand they were minors, so their charges would be reduced. But seven days probation?

    http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090626/ap_on_re_us/us...

The story obviously can't be as cut and dry as this. What were some of the circumstances surrounding this incident that resulted in such a lax sentence?

Any clarification you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

  • Officials just BLEW a call in the Civil War, w/ Rose Bowl implications. Why aren't offical errors reviewable?

Oregon @ Oregon State "Civil War" game: The official standing right next to the QB blew the ball dead, while the QB was still on his feet, and everybody was still moving. The ball popped out and was coming down to the ground BEFORE the official blew the whistle. An OSU player picked upo the "dead" ball, which would have been live in every other case, and ran it in. However, being called dead, the botched play was not reviewable. Why is this not so? Officials are supposed to enforce fairness in the game, not possibly affect the outcome.

The official who made the botched call was over with the referee, talking to the OSU, and you could read it on his face -- he screwed up and he knew it. Why are these mistakes allowed to stand?

  • Collins or Rivers & Turner, Dunn, or Stewart?

Who should I start. Usually, it would be Rivers without a doubt, but he sucked last week. Collins is considered a sleeper this week.

TEN is playing the Jets @ home, and Indy's @ SD

Also, what two-man combo should I use in RB: Turner, Dunn, or Stewart?

CAR @ ATL, and Tampa Bay is @ Detroit.

    Thanks for any input.

  • What Change will John McCain Bring to the White House ?

Recently, John McCain has changed his message to to more reflect a call for change. My question is: how will John McCain differ from President George W. Bush? Issues? Beliefs? All-around governing style? How exactly will he distinguish himself from the Bush presidency?

Slogans, like Jedi mind tricks, won't work here. Specifics would be great.

  • Fantasy Replacement For Tom Brady?

I had Tom Brady, now I need someone else, I have Phillip Rivers, who will likely be my Starting week 2. However, I need a replacement for the void Brady created.

There are a few options available:

    Matt Cassel

    CHad Pennington

    Matt Ryan

Who should I choose? Will Cassel be able to step up? Even with their loss, will Miami have a good enough season to justify Pennington? Is Ryan worth taking?

  • Low Blood Sugar Incidents with Family History, but I'm Not a Diabetic?

My father's side of the family has a history of Diabetes. My 45 year old Dad has it, my grandfather has it, my great-grandfather had it. I am 21 and do not have it; in fact, when I occasionally test, my blood sugar levels are almost always in the 80's & 90's.

However, last night I had low blood sugar. It was about 4 hours after dinner (Gen. Tsao chicken, chow mein, and a Pepsi) and I felt strange, and it was 56. This happened once before, about six months ago. Oddly enough, that night I ate at a Mongolian grill, and also had fried noodles. That time it was 44. I noticed that about four months ago, when I had a lot of pizza, I tested just our of curiosity, it was in the mid-70's.

So, my question is, why would the levels fall after carbs? I know about carb crash; Why does it seem that I'm so susceptible t o carbs, if I'm not a diabetic? I've had pizza and noodles since the first time, and nothing happened. What's with the occasional drops?

And yes, I have an appointment.

  • Should More States Enact Vote-By-Mail Systems?

I am from Oregon, the only state that is completely vote-by-mail. Local and state voting numbers are up since this was enacted. Presidential votes are up a little bit, too.

It's very easy: they mail the ballot to you, you fill in the arrow next to the person's name you want to vote for, and you stick it back into another envelope they send with it, you sign the envelope, stick a stamp on it (or drop it off if you want) and that's it.

You have about 2 weeks to make your decision on who you want to vote for, thus giving you ample time to decide and analyze each candidate, from you own home. This way, there's no taking time off work, and not finding time to go to the station.

What do you think of our system? Would you like your state to enact such a system?

  • Agree or Disagree: Bill Clinton Needs to "Step Back"?

Bill Clinton has stepped into the fray recently, criticizing Sen. Barack Obama, even though he is only a candidate's spouse, not the person running.

Do you think Bill Clinton overstepped the line of a spouse (which traditionally are cheerleaders for their candidate, on the rare occasions they speak publicly), or should special allowances be made for Clinton, considering he's a former President? Or, perhaps, should all spouses attack their candidate's political rivals?

This question's open to everybody; I appreciate all points of view.

  • What's The Point Of Superdelegates?

What's The Point Of Superdelegates? Why do other elected officials from a state get a delegate vote, therefore boosting a candidate's delegate count, even if they haven't won the state.

Why should my governor, or my senators, have a delegate vote at the convention. Candidates have to vie for delegates -- why the [all but] freebies?

    Some info on Superdelegates:

  • If you had to vote for a person of the opposite political party, who would it be and why?

Pretend for one reason or another, you HAD to vote for someone of the opposite political party. Who would you vote for, and why would you choose that person?

I'll start: I'd vote for Huckabee, because even though I would agree with him on almost nothing, he seems real, and isn't trying to fake what he believes, just to get votes (unlike some others in the GOP.)

    Your turn...

  • Wii Holiday Price Reduction?

I read online a month or two ago that there was a pretty healthy rumor that the Wii was going to be slightly reduced in price (permanently) starting around Christmas. Is there still any truth to this? I want one, but if they're going down a little bit, I'll hold off (not that I have a choice - I still haven't been able to find one in my area).

    Any info is greatly appreciated.

  • Will The U.S. Government Ever Acknowledge the 9/11 Rescuers Illnesses?

While Michael Moore & his movies are highly controversial, this latest one also brings up a good topic to discuss.

Will the government ever acknowledge the illnesses the Ground Zero rescue workers have developed, and do you think they will foot the bill for their ongoing sickness? It only seems fair that SOMEONE help them. If anyone has the resources to get these fine men and women the best health care in the world, I'd think it would be this one.

  • Why Is Congress Always Divided; What Can Be Done About It?

As I type this, I'm watching the House Session of the Oregon State legislature from earlier today (don't ask me why). Most of the bills they're voting on are passing unanimously, or almost unanimously, and they're doing it fast, too.

Obviously, state legislatures are smaller than the national Congress, but why do you honestly think that Congress takes so long to do their job (I'm speaking about every Congress, not just the current one). Should Congress expand and start working 4 days a week? How about 5 days a week?

What should Congress do to agree more, and work faster? No ideas will be denied (unless it calls for outlawing all other political parties.)

  • How Serious Is The Honeybee's Sudden Colony Collapse Disorder?

According to this graph, if all the honeybees dies off, except for those "grown" in farms to pollinate, we would lose pretty much all of the almond, apple, and blueberry crop, and take hits in other areas. Also, I assume honey would all but disappear.

    http://www.celsias.com/blog/2007/03/15/bee-colony-...

Other than having no almonds, apples, blueberries, or honey to eat (which is a bog problem in itself) when other problems would arise if the cause of Sudden Colony Collapse is not found and fixed?

Also, if anybody has a personal opinion or educated guess as to what's causing it, please feel free to share.

  • Hard Drive Format Question, FAT32 to NTFS?

It's my understanding that NTFS is a better format to operate XP in. I purchased a laptop last year, and my HDD is in FAT 32 format. I wish to convert it, if it is truly better. I realize this will require a recovery of my HDD; I don't have a problem with this.

My question, however, is about one of my partitions, which includes the recovery program for my computer (in lieu of a recovery CD). Since everything would be wiped, is there a way to reformat to NTFS without losing the program? If not, can I just reformat the C: partition, with Windows on it, and leave the other partition how it is?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
