Question for Muslims and Christians?
I am an atheist and, believe me, you aren't going to convince me to be a theist on these pages or anything you link to me. Trust me, I've already read it.
HOWEVER, I do believe that there is a lot of wisdom in the "old texts". What are the top (non-mystical) things that I should take from your religions? What are the key tenants of your religion that a true humanist should adopt?
LOL. Sorry, Zion, kinda figured the Christians got the OT covered, but have at it. Alls I'm looking for is a little truth.

From Islam, I would say everything. Let me give few 'examples' only without any order:
- Forgiveness. Even if you are being harmed, forgiveness is one of the things that receive very high rewards in Islam. The best time to forgive, is when you are at power.
- Optimism: "by optimistic, and you will find it". In so many times, Islam talks about being optimistic. Recently, I was with group of people on a corporate workshop and we saw the law of attraction ( http://www.thesecret.tv/ ). When I went out with my muslim colleagues, we were chatting, that this concept is always in our religion, but we never really paid deep attention to it.
- You should take care and be kind to your nighbours irregardless of any race, religion or nationality. Islam asked us to pay special attention up to the next 7 nighbours.
"he is not a believer, if he slept with full stomach and his nighbour slept in hunger" or "don't hurt him with the smell of your cooking". meaning, if you did real cooking, like BBQ, make sure that you give your nighbour, he might be hungry. Don't hurt his feeling.
- Of course in Islam alcohol is not allowed. And there is a rule: "if a lot of it makes you drunk, then a little of it is forbidden". And this applies to many aspects in your life. No compromise in doing the wrong things. This will apply to honesty, cheating, harming others for example.
- Education, learning, contemplation, thinking and exploring the truth. And in this, the Islam make it almost as important as a worship. The road to the real faith is education. It always ask people to stimulate the mind. And, it is not only the learning, but the teaching of others.
- Respect of parents to a big big extent, especially the mothers. Something I missed a lot in the western society.
- Being positive: "if you have a plant in your hand, and you saw the judgement day is about to start (i.e. the world is over), and you had time to plant it, the do it". There is no limits in being positive. This why, some of the deep Islamic scientists, while they were dying, they won't caring about themselves, but they were giving advices to the people around them.
- Life is a test. You succeed by two ways: being patient or being thankful:
If you are in the poor side (not necessarily money), then, being patient receive big big reward.
If you are in the rich side, then life isn't really about enjoyment and show off. You fail in the test if you spend your life this way. You succeed, if you being thankful by giving help to the poor side.
In a way, you always should be patient. Even when you are rich, you are patient for example if didn't use your money or power in getting super luxury items (that hurt the feeling of others).
- In Islam "best of you are the best manners"
- Lie is a big sin.
- Speaking bad about others, even without lies, is even a big big sin. (note: there are exceptions, for example, if you are being harmed, so you complain, or if you need to warn others about bad person).
- Best investment ever, is giving the poor. "charity never reduce the money". We believe, that this money will come back to you in another mean. For sure.
- Giving the poor in a way that your right left hand does not what your right hand gave. (meaning, hide it, don't show off, not even to the poor).
- Now, there are a lot of Islamic banks in Muslim worlds. The main difference, is to the consumer side. If you took loan and paid everything in time, there is almost no difference. But, if you failed to payback. You won't end up in paying penalties and pay back doubles what you borrowed. You are in debt for what you originally agreed with the bank.
In general, in Islam, it always limit the power of the powerful, to the weaker side.
In Islam, it promote working hard, earning money, getting competitive but not to the capitalism level. It is not social system as well. It is in between, closer to capitalism but with a lot of social aspects.
Okay, taking in mind all of this, let me tell you how my place was before it became modern city. When true Islamic values were there. I am not talking about an old history. My relatives who are in their 40s now, they tell me that they lived those days and remember it well:
- You go into the morning to grocery store, and you ask to buy food. The owner, refuse to let you in, and tell you, my nighbour (the next store) didn't have a good morning yet. Meaning, pls buy from him, he didn't have a single customer yet.
(well, in this, he believed in the right of nighbour, he had deep faith that by doing this good, his fortune will increase)
- When a man used to travel, his wife, will put the basket (that is used for shopping food) in front of the house. Anyone from nighbours, while passing, he would pick the basket, make shopping, the put it back. She won't even know who did it.

PROBABLY THAT ATHEISM IS BASED ON THIS ONE LIFE AND NOT ON THE ACTUALITY OF ETERNAL LIFE TO THOSE WHO BELIVE ON GOD. ALSO ATHESIM IS BASED ON SELF.

hey fellow athiest,
i also think things like the commandments are good to follow, of people wouldnt distort the bible and other religious texts, they'd be inspiring in themselves. But i'd say that an open mind is key for humanism.

From Christianity:
Love your enemies/turn the other cheek
Forgive your fellow man an infinite amount of times
The least shall be the greatest

God's wisdom is a foundational truth of Christianity and in His wisdom he sent His one and only Son to die for the sins of the world that whoever would believe in Jesus and put their trust in Him would have everlasting life.
For all those who have not called upon His name, there is nothing more important, more urgent, more pressing than the exercising of ones faith unto salvation through Christ Jesus.

Correct, you are absolutely right. There is so much wisdom in many religions, even if I don't believe in them I feel I will walk away with something useful from studying them.
As a Muslim, we are taught many, many good things. Unfortunately most people do not make it past the stereotypes to see them.

You don't have to be religious to appreciate the tenants of good behavior, treating others as you'd like to be treated, being helpful and kind, etc... To think of how to make the world a better place, and how your behavior impacts others. If only more people really tried to do those things.
