4 AnswersDo It Yourself (DIY)1 decade agoFor those that understand a little basic physics, a question
Special relativity revealed, in no uncertain terms, that all time exists at one point, right now, when viewed from all possible spatial viewpoints. The future is as set in stone as the past.
How can this be reconciled with a concept of free will?
I know there are people who have studied physics and yet still have the concept of a free will. How do you account for the obvious discrepancy between the realities of space-time and a non-deterministic concept of free will?
This is actually a question, I am not trying to make a point.
20 AnswersReligion & Spirituality1 decade agoNon-scientist question about special relativity and quantum entanglements
I am reading one of those physics for non-scientists books and have a question. Say you measure the spin of one of two entangled particles moving in opposite directions that are 10 million light years from each other at 9:00 AM EST on July 1st in the lab where the particle is measured. Will the second particle adopt the same spin at 9:00 AM EST on July 1st from the perspective of those measuring the first particle or will it be at a different time from that perspective? Am I completely missing something fundamental by asking this question?

I have been once and did the usual touristy things (baths, castle, Island, etc.). I am going on Sunday for a week and wondering if anyone has any suggestions for something to do that is a bit off the beaten path?
Thanks.
2 AnswersOther - Europe1 decade agoJesus died for our sins?
This claim has always perplexed me and I am interested in intelligent Christian answers on the subject.
I have read the NT a few times and this is whay I have gathered:
The original sin closed the gates of heaven and it required Jesus to sacrifice himself to reopen them.
Is this correct?
If so, why? God closed the gates, why would sacrificing his son to himself make himself open his gates?
What is the mechanism at play.
I am very literal minded, so please no poetry, scripture, words with double meaning, or vague non-committal answers.
Thanks.
32 AnswersReligion & Spirituality1 decade agoAtheists, do you ever feel guilty?
This weekend I took my mentee to see his grandmother, who is quite ill and quite old. His aunt and the grandmother both made the comment that they don't know how they would have gotten through everything without Jesus.
Now, I know Jesus is a fictional character but in her mind he is real and the idea gave her comfort.
Do you ever feel guilty opening the eyes of theists, knowing that you may be destroying a mental tool that has helped them through hard times? Also knowing, that we have nothing to give them to replace that tool other than logical deconstruction, which doesn't work for everyone?
31 AnswersReligion & Spirituality1 decade agoWhat's the problem with Scientology?
The geekosphere is suddenly all hot on sticking it to Scientology. Why? Anonymous finally gets off his butt and out of his mom's basement and the big enemy is Scientology? The smartest hackers and revolutionaries finally get moving. Torture and GITMO? No. Oil industry cabal? No. The big thing they are worried about is some kooky cult.
Why? Why this?
Just lulz?

8 AnswersReligion & Spirituality1 decade agoQuestion for Muslims and Christians?
I am an atheist and, believe me, you aren't going to convince me to be a theist on these pages or anything you link to me. Trust me, I've already read it.
HOWEVER, I do believe that there is a lot of wisdom in the "old texts". What are the top (non-mystical) things that I should take from your religions? What are the key tenants of your religion that a true humanist should adopt?

2 AnswersHeart Diseases1 decade agoHas Obama already been swift-boated?
We all know the right has developed a sure fired strategy that work very well. Lie. Lie often and consistantly.
As evil as it is, it does work and it works well.
Do you think they have successfully implanted the lie that Obama is a Muslim who disrespects the flag (whatever that means) and is possibly the anti-christ?
I fear the deed is done and there is no way he can win the general election. Please tell me I am wrong.

Can someone point me to some information about electrolytic gels? I understand some basic chemistry, but something for a non-scientist would be helpful. A little more fleshed out than just a blurb.

Isn't the central point of the 2nd amendment that we should be able to defend ourselves against a tyranical government? A 9mm isn't going to do much against a US Army tank.

7 AnswersMovies1 decade agoDo any other atheists see beauty in the message of Jesus?
I mean the fundamental message of the New Testement. Treat all with respect. Forgive them their trespasses. ALWAYS be the first to turn the other check.
It seems that the message is that if we live as true humanists and put others before ourselves, we will achieve heaven on earth.
Is it possible for theistic Christians and atheistic humanists to work together on this dream? Does anyone have any examples?
